Resource Wars

Lean and Dino

Resource Wars
• All over the world today resources
have already been depleting because
of the worlds unlimited wants and
needs to enhance the lifestyle of a
growing population
Resources Wars
• Because of these scarce resources,
countries have been figuring out
ways in order for them to get hand of
these vital factors for production of
materials, technology, nutrition,
luxury, and even power to gain
control
Resource Wars
• Unfortunately, the issue of resource
wars is evident in the way
researchers patent scientific
discoveries so that all proceeds and
revenues or at least payment for the
use of this discovery should be
credited to the country that has
patented it
Resource Wars
• However, there are more serious
matters that even involve violence in
order achieve what they want from
another country
Oil Wars
• A study that none of us is unaware of
is the war going on in the Middle
East. OPEC by 2010 is will be holding
50% of the worlds oil resources
• This organization, which also
includes the Middle East, holds and
distributes them globally
Oil Wars
Oil Wars
• Countries like Russia and Venezuela
are also in danger that they maybe
target by the US for the oil since they
have it but not as much as the
Middle East
• Iraq was illegally attacked by the US
Oil Wars
Oil Wars
• America, as we know it, consumes
more oil than any other country in
the world
• They also believe that the Middle
East holds more than enough for
themselves but however the
Americans resolve in war and force
Oil Wars
• A very suspicious fact why America
bombs and invades the Middle East
is somewhat related to the
September 11 incident. Saudi
Arabians were actually behind the
suicide jets which took down the
World Trade Towers
Oil Wars
Oil Wars
• In maybe future wars for oil, the top
3 are the Americans, the Europeans,
the and the Chinese
Mineral Wars
• When you send an instant message
thru your cell phone to a friend or
maybe when you play the latest
online games on your computer,
think about the many people in
conflict just to be able to produce
another cell phone
Mineral Wars
Mineral Wars
• Congo – Africa, civil and ethnic wars
continue so as to have claim over
land that has coltan
• This is a key substance in most of our
cell phones, computer chips, and
PlayStations
Mineral Wars
• Coltan is also the general reason why
war still exists in Africa
• Foreign involvement which is why
these minerals being bought cause
tensions between ethnic groups and
has partly to blame why bloodshed
had not yet stopped
Mineral Wars
Mineral Wars
Mineral Wars
• Congo has been in ethnic war, but
also, it is in war for resources in
minerals
• This coltan is also short for the
Columbite-tantalit
• power-storing components in
gadgets
Mineral Wars
• Not only have conflict diamonds kill
millions of people and exploit
mountains of its riches, but also,
miners decrease the biodiversity of
the Congo
Mineral Wars
Mineral Wars
• Miners kill elephants, gorillas, and
other animals that face extinction
just for money
• Elephants are killed for the tusks
while the rest are only to be eaten
Mineral Wars
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• However, there is another kind of
conflict that the world is having right
now, and it does not involve weapons
and physical violence to get
resources and profit from these
resources
Medical Drug Patent Wars
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• The patent wars of medical
discoveries
• Having their drugs and discoveries
patented means that they have total
control and right for any proceeds
and benefits there after from this
discovery
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• This industry is a business for big
distributors that is why millions of
dollars are invested in the
development of products and new
researches
• What now then happens to
developing countries such as the
Philippines?
Medical Drug Patent Wars
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• Countries like us do not afford to buy
such expensive drugs and wish that
because of our situation, we can
claim the right to produce medicine
especially for those who are dying
• We can also import other generic
drugs from other countries, but this
unfortunately, will cost more than
the generic drugs produced locally in
developing countries
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• large companies sue local countries
for patent infringement
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• For example, in the South and South-
East Asia, 6.5 million are infected
with aids according to UNAIDS, aside
from this fact, this virus is currently
spreading at an increasing rate
throughout the region
• There was one country who tried to
provide cheaper drugs for the market
and other people who are infected
with the decease
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• This country is India
• India is equipped with advanced
technology to discover and find ways
to produce effective but cheap drugs
for countries like Africa and Russia
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• But, no matter how good these
Indians are, the major distributors
like the pharmaceutical company
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is against
Cipla and Ranbaxy
• India’s leading pharmaceutical
laboratories
Medical Drug Patent Wars
Medical Drug Patent Wars
Medical Drug Patent Wars
• The World Health Organization being
influenced by GSK banned two drugs
produced by Cipla
• This banned drug is able to combat
the virus more efficiently
Water Wars
• The world now has also begun losing
its resource of water
• Water is very important to the
human body and everyday life
• Like other resources such gas, we
are already experiencing a shortage
on water
Water Wars
Water Wars
• Just to show how water begins
becoming a shortage, and there is
also conflict even in the most basic
and universal liquids of the earth, the
World Bank has just recently
implemented its policy of having
water privatized and water become
of full-cost
Water Wars
• Last year, a producer had filled a
super-tanker which is filled by water
coming from Lake Erie in Europe was
sent to South-East Asia
• Currently, the Canadian government
is making efforts in trying to pursue
other governments from around the
world to stop privatizing, selling, and
exporting water because water is
essential to life and should not have
Water Wars
Water Wars
• Now governments have already
signed in with the World Trade
Organizations and other programs
that state a governments’ release
over control of their domestic water
supply
Greenland
• Due to its thick layers of permafrost
and thus, huge deposits of fresh
water, it is now a popular must have
for nations in the temperate climate
which now experience a crisis on
water.
• Greenland is also home to research
facilities, species of distinct kinds,
and military bases.
Greenland
• Greenland is also more valuable now,
more than ever. This is due to the
drastic rate in which the ice caps are
melting.
Greenland
• The whole hullabaloo Global
Warming is causing millions to set
their eyes on Greenland, not to make
it a territory of their own, but for its
preservation. Countries all over the
world are working for the
preservation of its permafrost layers
which are fast approaching its end.
Greenland
• Through this, it can be seen that
people are not non-negotiable
stones.
Cod Wars
• This was due to the fact that it was a
fight over Cod fish that a war was
almost waged. The British and the
Icelandic people were accusing one
another of over-fishing. The Coast
Guard of Iceland cut fishing nets and
rammed British fishing boats in order
to show authority. Furthermore,
Iceland sets a 200mile boundary in
the ocean to make the area exclusive
for the use of Icelandic ships.
Cod Wars
• Iceland threatened to close the
NATO base in Keflavik in order to
place the British under their heels.
The NATO base in Keflavik is a crucial
element of the British’s defense in
the Atlantic. Thus, its loss can be
worth more than the gains of Cod
fish catch.
• The British submits to this threat
and thus puts an end on the resource
war on Cod fish.
Cod Wars
• Even on the small scale of fish, wars
can still be waged for the sake of
resource management. Nevertheless,
it can be seen on this case that
resource wars can be negotiated.
Fearless scenes which portray children pointing and
shooting guns without much inhibition, to a romance
ruined by the greed of a villain, these resonate the
pangs of resource wars. Resource wars affect the
personal dimension of society up to the expanse of
structural dimension in which core morals
are affected.
Spanish Occupation
• Spices were one of the primary
reasons of the Spaniards for
colonizing the Philippines. Eventually,
they were able to nurse these spices
in their own land.
• Their reasons for conquering the
Philippine Islands transformed from a
mere need of spices, as the historian
Teodoro Agoncillo puts it, to a quest
for the Three G’s, namely, God, Gold,
and Glory.
Great Depression - America
• The Americans, early on the 1900’s,
experienced the Great Depression
wherein they went through tough
times due to the imbalances in the
behavior of their economy since they
have been crossing new borders. Due
to this hardship, they made the
Filipinos produce a great deal of
tobacco and sugar.
Great Depression - America
• Due to this hardship, they made the
Filipinos produce a great deal of
tobacco and sugar. This caused a
boom of development in the
Philippines as our products were sold
at a high price in the Americas.
Great Depression - America
• Although, soon enough, the economy of
the Americans stabilized and thus, they
had a surplus of sugar and tobacco coming
from the Philippines and its colonies.
• Sugar farmers and tobacco farmers were
told to cease production, and much of
their produce were left unsold. The then
booming industry of Naga sugar, Panay
sugar, were held to a sudden close.
Great Depression - America
• In the long run, the land used for
sugar planting can now be used for
nothing else but sugar, when there is
not as much need for sugar.
Neo-Colonialism
Conclusion
• Resource wars are brought about
mainly because there is a scarcity of
goods in the world.
• Resource wars cause wide scale
inequalities in the society, even for
the slightest, smallest resource. As
seen in our case, we have never
really grown healed from the effects
of the resource wars in our country
Conclusion
• There is no one to blame but the
global community as resource is a
universal need, although, not a
universal, unlimited, commodity.
Conclusion
• Although, the promulgation of
violence is inexcusable for nations
promoting such acts, along with the
manipulation of people’s intellectual
property rights. All these root from
the greed of people.
Conclusion
• As seen in the case of Iceland against
Britain over Cod fishes, there is really
no shortage of supply, only a farce in
distribution. In the global scale, in
the case of Greenland, we can see
that resources, though finite, can be
kept free if distributed evenly.
As the great Lennon-McCartney coined
it, “we can work it out.”
