MEANING
Quality in the driver to do the right
thing smoothly at the right time, with
due regard to other road users & and
passengers.

METHODS:-
A) The driver must be thoroughly conversant with
his own duties so that his mind is absolutely
clear.
B) Five Factors:- The following five factors help in
acquiring road sense.
i) Experience.
ii) Fore Thought.
iii) Confidence.
iv) Rules of the Road.
v) Sixth sense. 7
EXPERIENCE:-
A learner is taught the correct use of
controls of the vehicle not only of how to
behave on the road, but also of the
behavior and mistakes he may expect
from others. After training his experience
really begins & he gains experience
instinctively to avoid faults which lead to
accidents. It is during the period of self
training that he learns habits good or bad.

GOOD ROAD SENSE
ACQUIRED BY:-
1. Learn to judge distance & speed to other vehicles.
2. Avoid hesitancy .
3. Make right decision quickly.
4. Use right speed at the right place.
5. Recognize road surface in advance.
6. Have proper regard for passengers.
7. Smoothness in driving.
8. Adapt to lighting and weather conditions.
9. Constant observation & alertness.

FORE-THOUGHT
Driver must be intelligent enough to
understand things easily & act quickly
to meet the situation & to grasp events
coming in advance & make best use of
his imagination to ward off dangers he
is likely to come across. Have foresight
& visualize all emergencies likely to
arise in his path such as:-

A) Vehicle in front may stop suddenly & without
warning.
B) A vehicle or cyclist in front may skid or turn
without or signal.
C) A vehicle form behind may cut in front of him.
D) A stationary vehicle may move off without
signal.
E) A vehicle may emerge suddenly from side
turnings, gateway & blind corners.
F) Pedestrians may step off the pavement,
stumble on the road hesitate or turn back.

G) Children, Dogs & Cattle may dash
across the road.
H) Traffic indicators on the vehicle may
be operated & forgotten thus giving
wrong signals.
I) Doors of stationary vehicles may
open.

RULES OF THE ROAD
The road users are required to have thorough
knowledge of the highway code. It is incumbent on
all drivers to make themselves acquainted with the
rules of the road of a country in which they are
operating.
Highway code given in Indian highway safety code.
Contains road signs, traffic signals, traffic lights
signals police signals, do’s and don’ts & convoy
signals.

SIXTH SENSE
Exists in all drivers but is pronounced
some times only.
At times one may expect a certain
emergency to develop & it sure enough
it happens.
Thus sixth sense occupy some a small
corner in the broad field of road sense.

ROAD SIGNS
1) These should be visible to all road
users.
2) Should be posted between 50
meters to 70 meters from the
object for which they are meant.
3) At least 5 feet above the ground .

A)CAUTIONARY SIGNS.
B)INFORMATORY SIGNS.
C)MANATORY SIGNS OR ORDER
SIGNS.

INFORMATORY SIGNS
a) Meant to give certain information to the road
users.
b) Example :- parking place, height above the
sea level, the way to dak bungalow.
c) Designed on a rectangular board.
d) Background of blue color and white box ,

MANDATORY SIGNS
Meant to give an order to the road
users.
Example:- overtaking prohibited,
dead slow, speed limits.
Designed on a circular board of 61cm
diameter painted red or having red
border of 7.5 cm on a white
background. 20
PROVOST SIGNS
Generally meant for army personnel only ( in
exceptional cir other traffic may also have to
act on it).
Example:- Out of bounds for all ranks, traffic
control post ahead, dispersal area.
No hard and fast rule for their shape and size
or color, they should be sufficiently large 61x61
cm (usual size)
Yellow color board with black letters.

CONCLUSION
The driver must be taught by practical
experience the varying conditions on the
road.
Observe coolness & good manners as a
habit even in provocative situation.
Be conversant with his duty, duties of
other road users, highway code & road
etiquette.
Should posses a copy of Do’s and Don'ts .
