Lewis Structure
Structure
CLASS OBJECTIVES
Draw Lewis structure of ions,
Apply the octet rule in the formation of
molecular covalent compounds, and
Write the formula of molecular
compounds formed by the nonmetallic
elements of the representative block.
IONS
An ion is an atom or group
of atoms that has an
electric charge. Ions with a
positive charge are called
cations. Ions with a
negative charge are called
anions.
LEWIS
STRUCTURE
For Ionic compounds
the Lewis Dot
Structure must show
how the electrons are
being transferred to
form the ions in the
compound.
OCTET RULE
The Octet Rule requires all
atoms in a molecule to
have 8 valence electrons--
either by sharing, losing or
gaining electrons--to
become stable.
OCTET RULE
A stable arrangement is attended
when the atom is surrounded by
eight electrons. This octet can be
made up by own electrons and
some electrons which are shared.
Thus, an atom continues to form
bonds until an octet of electrons is
made.
Normally two electrons pairs up and
forms a bond, e.g., H
