VERBS AND VOICE
◦ Voice is the form of a verb takes to indicate whether the subject of the verb
performs or recieves the action
◦ There are two types of voice:
1.Active voice.
2.Passive voice.
Active Voice
Active voice is used to show that the subject of the sentence is performing or
causing the action.
Active Voice is more direct and concise.
Example:
1. Lebron threw the basketball before the buzzer.
2. Lebron scored three points.
Passive voice

Passive voice is used when the subject is the recipient of the action.
Passive voice is usually wordier.
Example:
1. The ball was thrown by Lebron.
2. The score was made by Lebron.
REPORTED SPEECH
◦ To report what another person has said, but not using the speaker’s exact
words.
◦ The structure is a little different depending on whether we want to transform a
statement, question or request.
CAREFUL..!
◦ Quotation marks are not used in reported speech.
◦ Verb tenses, pronouns and some “time” and “place” words may change because the
time,place and speaker may be different.
◦ The reporting verb may be in the present or in the past :
◦ If it is in the present tense, there are no tense change.
◦ But if it is in the past tense, there are tense ,person and place changes.
Examples:
Peter said: “I haven’t done my homework”.
Peter said he hadn’t done his homework.
