Origin of Tsunami
 The name tsunami is Japanese word,

displacement along a fault located on Tsu nami
the ocean floor or from a large “Harbor” “wave”
underwater landslide triggered by an
tsunami
earthquake. late 19th century
 Tsunami wavelengths is far longer.
 Resemble a rapidly rising tide.
A tsunami in the open ocean can
pass undetected because its
height is usually less than 1
meter and the distance between
wave crests is great, ranging
from 100 to 700 kilometers.
Entering shallower coastal
water, these destructive
waves are slowed, and the
water begins to pile up to
heights that occasionally
exceed 30 meters (100 feet).
