ACTIVITY: THE IMPOSSIBLE
DIRECTIONS: Watch the short movie
film about ‘ The Impossible’ and
answer the guide questions.
1. What is the film all about?
1. What is the film all about?

The Impossible is a drama, it is based on

Maria’s Belon’s and her family’s.
experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean
tsunami.
2. What did you learn from the film?

Though Maria and her family face their darkest

hour, still unexpected displays of kindness and
courage change their terror.

EARTHQUAKES AND
TSUNAMIS
TSUNAMI
American Pronunciation

Is a Japanese word pronounced

Soo-na-me

Japanese word
‘tsu’ which means harbor
‘nami’ which means wave
TSUNAMI-
is a series of waves caused by the
displacement of a large volume of
water. Generally, in an ocean or a large
lake. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
and other underwater explosions above or
below water all have the potential to
generate a tsunami.
TSUNAMI AND
EARTHQUAKES
The Philippines is no stranger to Earthquakes. Tsunami in the Philippine
are extremely RARE
Prior to March, 2011 the last recorded tsunami in the
Philippines that actually caused loss of lives, occurred in the
Verde Island passage between Batangas and Mindoro Island ,
affecting Puerto Gallera in the early morning of the 15 of
November 1994. Originating from 7.1 magnitude earthquake,
according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology Seismology
HOW ARE EARTHQUAKES RELATED TO
TSUNAMIS?

MOVING OF FAULT ON LAND

EARTHQUAKE
MOVING OF FAULT IN OR NEAR A BODY OF WATER

TSUNAMI
Most tsunamis are caused by large earthquake on the sea floor when slabs
of rock moves past each other suddenly, causing the overlying water to
move. The results waves move away from the source of the earthquake.

Tsunamis are generated from large, shallow earthquakes with an epicenter

or fault line near or on the ocean floor, These usually occur in regions of
the Earth characterized along tectonic subduction. Most tsunamis are
generated by shallow, great earthquake at subductions zone.
Fault

Faults are found not only on land but also under the sea. When a fault at the
bottom of the sea suddenly moves, the water above it can be affected. A
sudden push from an underwater fault can produce a water called tsunami

ON LAND UNDER THE

SEA
WIND WAVE TSUNAMI

Far from the shore, a tsunami is low, maybe just a

meter high . But it travels at the speed of a jet plane.
When the tsunami reaches the shore, it slows down but
it grows in height.
When a fault suddenly moves on land, you get an earthquake. But of a fault
suddenly moves in or near of body of water, you may get a tsunami in
addition to the earthquake, thus, when you are near the sea and you feel a
string earthquake treat that as a warning signal

Run to the highest place

you can find or if
you have a
vehicle, evacuate.
Not every fault movement beneath the sea will produce a tsunami.
Those faults that move in a horizontal direction or sideways will not
result a tsunami. Those faults that move in a horizontal direction or
the fault has to move in the vertical sense,

● \
IS TSUNAMI DESTRUCTIVE?

PROBABLY, YES!
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE REASON BEHIND
IT?
The force of the ocean is behind it. This is the reason
why whole towns and cities are totally devastated after
a tsunami attack.

Guide Questions
1. What was formed in the water by the sudden push of
the plastic panel?
A wave was formed by the sudden push
2. How was the water level by the rock affected by the
wave? The water level went up.
3. What does the water represent? How about the rock?
The water represents the sea
The rock represents land
4. What does the plastic panel represent?
The plastic panel represents the rocks that suddenly
move along an underwater fault.

big waves hit your area. Write at least 3 Safety measures in each column that
may help you when this disaster occur,
