Map skills
What is a map?
They are illustrations or pictures that give us
visual information about different places in
the world. They are usually 2-dimensional,
meaning they are flat.

Depending on the type of map, we can observe

the shape of a country, the streets in a city, the
location of airports, or the heights of different
buildings.
What is a map?
Maps are created by mapmakers or
cartographers. The process of making a map
is called cartography.

Before the rise of technology, cartographers

did basic drawings. Now with the help of
modern technology, they can mass produce and
print maps.
What are the different parts of a
Map?

Locator Map

Scale
Parts of a Map
→The Title tells us the topic and kind of map being used.
Example: Topographical Map of Asia, Climate Map of Japan

→The Legends or Keys give the meaning of the symbols used.

The Symbols represent different features on the map.
Example: ◍ National Capital, ▲ Mountains, ▤ Farmland

→The Scale describes the ratio of a distance on the map to the

corresponding distance on the ground.
Example: 1 inch in a map may represent 10 kilometers in real life.
Parts of a Map
→The Compass Rose or North Arrow shows the directions on the
map.

→The Grid tells us the exact location or coordinates of an area using

latitude and longitude.
Example: The Philippines is located around 13° N, 122° E.
Types of Legends
Since maps are representations of the real world, symbols are needed to
represent objects and things found in specific places.
Let’s Answer!

What are the different types of Map?
Types of Maps
There are many different types of maps, but the most
common are:
→Physical Maps
→Topographic Maps
→Political Maps
→Weather Maps
→Road Maps
→Economic/Resource Maps
→Population Maps
Physical Maps
Physical maps show the natural
landforms and bodies of water in an
area.
It uses different colors to represent
the depth and elevation in an area;
changes in the height of a landform are
shown by changes in the shades of
color used.
Topographical Maps
Topographical maps are like physical
maps as they show both the physical
features and elevation in an area.
The only difference is that
topographical maps use contour lines
instead of color to show elevation.
The closer the lines are, the steeper the
elevation is.
Political Maps
Political maps show features like cities,
states, provinces, and bodies of water as
well as the boundaries and roads of the
country.

Some political maps also include different

landmarks, tourist spots, airports, and train
stations within the area.
Weather Maps
Also known as Climate maps, these maps
can be about different weather
conditions, like snow, rain, or temperature
throughout a specific area.
Different colors are used to show different
climates and conditions.
Road Maps
Road maps show the many different
highways and roads as well as airports,
cities, stopovers, monuments, and parks.
Major highways are usually outlined with
thick lines while minor roads are
outlined with thinner lines.
Economic Maps
Also known as Resource maps, these
maps show the different resources or
economic activity in the area.

They use colors, symbols, or letters for

different industries or products.
Population Maps
Population maps show us how many
people live in an area. It can also
show the population by income, age,
gender, culture, class, and many more
factors.

Different colors are used to show the

population density in an area.
Uses of Map
Most of the time maps are used to
show different political boundaries,
landforms, and bodies of water found
around the world.
What is Relative
Location?
Social science

Relative
Location
Relative Location
Relative location is the position of a certain place or
objects relative to other places or objects. Directions or
distances can be used to describe this.

Always consider the nearest place from the point of

reference.

Natural Hazards
In the National Capital Region, there are many hazards and danger-
prone areas. With this in mind, we should be able to prepare ourselves
in case we encounter any danger.

• Earthquakes
• Floods & Storm Surges
• Fire-prone Areas
Earthquakes
How do Earthquakes occur?
Due to movement along a fault or a
break in the Earth’s crust, earthquakes
happen all around the world.

In NCR, we have the Marikina Valley

Fault which runs through 6 cities. It can
produce magnitude 7 earthquakes which
causes buildings to topple and roads to
break.
Earthquakes
How do we stay safe? - Pull aside and move away from water if you are
BEFORE an Earthquake: in a car
- Make sure your house/school is structurally AFTER an Earthquake:
strong and does not fall easily - If you are inside a weak structure, make sure to
- Learn the location of emergency exits and sturdy take the fastest and safest way out
locations to hide under - Do not use elevators but instead stairs
- Maintain an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, - Check yourself and others for any injuries that
beverage, first-aid kit, mask, and candle may need to be tended to
- Follow instructions from the government and local
DURING an Earthquake: government on what to do next
- Hide under a sturdy desk or table if you are in a
structurally sound building.
- If outside, stay away from any buildings or poles
on the street. Move away from cliffs or hills that
could potentially landslide
Flooding & Storm Surge
How do Storm Surges occur?
A storm surge is water pushed by the winds
swirling around a storm. It means that a
typhoon strong enough can being a storm
surge that may lead to flooding.

The floods are especially higher around

coastal areas. Floods can be found
everywhere in NCR’s low areas during a
typhoon. Water from higher up falls to areas
that are lower and/or less developed.
Fire – prone Areas
What are Fire-prone Areas?
Fire-prone areas are regions that frequently
have fire incidents.

Most often the causes of fires are faulty

electrical connection, lit cigarette butts, open
flame from a torch, unattended stoves/ovens,
and electrical appliances.

Other than that, fire can also easily spread if

a neighborhood’s houses are made of light
materials like wood, sacks, and cardboard.
