The spanish Church

From ; A woman Passion for Travel by Cathrine watson In Marybeth Cond and Pamela Michel

This story is about a girl who loves to travel many places. She had travelled many
places. In this story she goes for a hike with her friends in a small town of spain named
Portomarin and a shrine of Saint James in the city of Santiago de Compestela .
(Portomarin Church was built on a high place where the dam of water could not
damage. It was surrounded by a high wall .)
• After walking down a very long hill, she arrived happily in portomarin where fortress
church lies.
• Her friends went on but she stopped for a while on a lichen- painted wall of gray stone
because she was footsore. Not only because she was footsore, she herself also wanted to
rest there for a while and observe the beauty of that place. It was one of the best feeling
for her.
• Suddenly a couple of hotshot Italian bikers passed by her on very high speed while she
was sitting on the wall. she saw them again at the bottom of the hill, one helping the
other with a newly ruptured tire. She thought they got what they deserved.
• (amino de Santiago is a sacred way. It’s a perfect hill for biking and walking. Camino de
Santiago is naturally very beautiful place. Its very traditional type of place.
Although its naturally very beautiful, those Italian bikers weren’t going at it reverently.  she
felt sorry for the time the two bikers were going to have spend, prying off the tire. She
thought it was better to be on foot.
That night she stayed with her friends in a modern, white posada, sleeping well in clean
sheets. They were in the great shrine of Saint James in the city of Santiago de Compostela,
Which made all of them pilgrims of some sort. But none of them were religious. (The great
shrine of Saint James is a religious place where the body of disciple of Jesus Christ named
Saint James was kept who died for Jesus Christ .)

so she concluded that it was better to be in foot. She passed the night with her friend
in a modern inn. Portomarian is a restructured town and the church was made of the
same historic stones. She felt spiritually connected with the church so much that she
wanted to go there alone. But she found a boy there and felt that they were already
familiar. They did not talk as they were both strangers but the silence of the church
was the language in which they spoke to one another. The boy disappeared and she
also went to her friends. The friends asked  her how was the church and she said, ‘It
was nice; very nice”.
 Questions
d) What made the author conclude ” It was better to be on foot”?
Ans. The author saw two bikers going to have to spend time in prying the tire off,
gluing a patch on the punctured inner tube, reassembling the thing, pumping air back
in, and hoping the patch would hold. This suffering and time consuming of the boys
made her conclude that it was better to be on foot.

e) Describe the boy whom the author saw at the church. What did he need?
Ans. The boy was along. He was young. He was wearing a red wind breaker. He had no
friends. He had pleasant face, wide mouth and sandy hair. He was staring upward at
the window above the altar. He needed friendship as he was alone.
