What is Space
Planets

The Solar System
◦The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that
orbit it, either directly or indirectly. Of the objects that orbit the Sun directly, the
largest are the eight planets, with the remainder being smaller objects, such as the five
dwarf planets and small Solar System bodies. 
Astronaut

◦An astronaut or cosmonaut is


a person trained by a human
spaceflight program to
command, pilot, or serve as a
crew member of a spacecraft.
Nasa

◦The National Aeronautics and Space


Administration is an independent agency
of the United States Federal
Government responsible for the civilian
space program, as well as aeronautics and
aerospace research. NASA was
established in 1958, succeeding the
National Advisory Committee for
Aeronautics.
Satellite
◦In the context of spaceflight,
a satellite is an object that
has been intentionally placed
into orbit. These objects are
called artificial satellites to
distinguish them from natural
satellites such as Earth's
Moon. On 4 October 1957
the Soviet Union launched
the world's first artificial
satellite, Sputnik 1.
