What Are Infinitive?
• An infinitive is a verb that functions as a noun, adjective, or
adverb. The function of the infinitive verb is to express an opinion, the
purpose of an object, an action, and answer the question of who,
what, or why.
• The basic formula for the infinitive usually starts with the word " to "
and is followed by the base form of a verb .
Use of Infinitive Verbs in Sentences

There are several uses of infinitive verbs in English sentences. Among


others are:
Stating must ( must )
• The students are to do the school assignment. ( Students have to do
schoolwork.)
• She is to obey the rules of her parents. ( He must obey his parents'
rules.)
• I am to go home before 11.00 PM. ( I have to be home before 11pm.)
Use of Infinitive Verbs in Sentences

There are several uses of infinitive verbs in English sentences. Among


others are:
Expressing hope
• The game is supposed to begin at 10.00 PM. ( The game was supposed
to start at 10pm.)
• The committee is supposed to meet tomorrow. (The committees are
supposed to meet tomorrow.)
• I am supposed to go to the meeting. My boss told me that he wants me
to attend. (I should have gone to a meeting. My boss told me he
wanted me to attend.)
Use of Infinitive Verbs in Sentences

There are several uses of infinitive verbs in English sentences. Among


others are:
Explain the purpose
• He comes here to see me. ( He came here to see me.)
• We watched the match live to support the team. ( We watch the game
to support the team.)
• I borrow money to pay the rent. ( I borrowed money to pay rent.)
Use of Infinitive Verbs in Sentences

There are several uses of infinitive verbs in English sentences. Among others are:
Used after the word order
• The mobile phone was first to emerge in 1995 .
• I am the second person to buy the book. ( I was the second person to buy the book.)
• This is the thousandth to say the prayer. (This is the thousandth time to say the prayer.)

Following   certain verbs
• I can't afford to buy the new iPad. ( I can't afford to buy a new ipad.)
• They agreed to help us. ( They agreed to help us.)
• She is appearing to worry about the weather. ( He starts to worry about the weather.)
Use of Infinitive Verbs in Sentences

There are several uses of infinitive verbs in English sentences. Among others are:
Explaining nouns
• I need a glass of milk to drink. ( I need a glass of milk to drink.)
• We need some books to read. ( You need some books to read.)

Used after the words  too  and  enough


• It is too good to be true. ( This is too good to be true.)
• I have enough strength to lift the box. ( I have enough strength to lift the box.)
• I'm strong enough to lift the box. ( I'm strong enough to lift the box.)
Use of Infinitive Verbs in Sentences

There are several uses of infinitive verbs in English sentences. Among others are:
Used after an adjective
• English is easy to learn. ( English is easy to learn.)
• I am glad to meet you. ( I'm glad to meet you.)
• I am proud to have you as my brother. ( I'm proud to have you as a brother/sister.)

As  a certain verb  (verb) and used as the object of the actor ( objective pronoun )
• She advised us to wait until tomorrow. ( He suggests waiting until tomorrow.)
• He allows me to use his car. ( He allowed me to use his car.)
• I'm asking you to help them. (I ask for your willingness to help them.)
