Quarter 1 - Module 4:
Changes in the
Properties of Materials when
Exposed to Different
Temperatures
At the end of this module, you will be
able to:
1. Define heating.
2. Define cooling
3. Describe what happens to the
materials when heated.
4. Describe what happens to the
materials when cooled.
Lesson 1
Define Heating
Find the names of the
materials that melt when
heated and go back to
their original form when
cooled.
Word Clue
cheese candle
ice cream butter
Crayons
Identify what happens
to these materials
when heated and after
they were cooled
down.
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the styro
cup when heated?
2. Describe what you observed
with the cheese when it was
heated?
3. What would be the result after
the crayon has been cooled?
Learning Circuit!
When the materials are
heated, they changed
their size, shape, and
texture. They also
changed their forms.
When cooled, the liquid materials
were changed to solid. The
materials (crayon, wax, ice cream
and margarine) changed their
form from solid to liquid when
heated. Their sizes, shapes, and
textures also changed.
Some materials (crayon,
chocolate, cheese and
margarine) changed back to
their form from liquid to solid
when cooled. Their sizes,
shapes, and textures also
changed.
Guide Questions:
1. What happens to the materials
when they undergo heating?
2. How would you describe the
candle after being heated?
3. Why did the chocolate bar
change its form when heated?
LESSON 1:
USE WEATHER INSTRUMENTS
A WEATHER INSTRUMENT IS ANY TYPE OF INSTRUMENT DEVICE
THAT GIVES INFORMATION ABOUT WEATHER. WHERE IN,
METEOROLOGISTS AND HOBBYISTS USE MANY DIFFERENT
TYPES OF WEATHER INSTRUMENTS TO GAUGE ACCURATE
INFORMATION ABOUT CURRENT CLIMATE CLIMATE AND HELP TO
PREDICT FUTURE WEATHER.
Guage
Refer to module
Cooling and Freezing are two
of the processes that matter
undergo.
In previous lessons, you learned
that when materials are heated,
theychanged in their size, shape
and texture.
METEOROLOGISTS DO NOT USE THES INSTRUMENTS
IN A LAB. YHEY ARE USED IN THE FIELD, PLACED
OUTDOORS AS A SUITE OF SENSORS WHICH,
TOGETHER PROVIDE A COMPLETE PICTURE OF
WEATHER CONDITIONS.
ACTIVITY 1: FIND ME!
Direction: Find the words that are related to weather in the puzzle below. Encircle the word in the box.

WEATHER
INSTRUMENTS
THERMOMETER
- measures the air temperature.
-these are glass tubes that contains liquid
such as alcohol or mercury. that when air
around the tube heats the liquid, the liquid
expands and moves up the tube.
- it may bear FARENHEIT, CELCIUS OR
BOTH. Air Temperature is read DEGREES
FARENHEIT or 0F and DEGREES CELCIUS
or 0C.

- TEMPERATURE is the hotness or

coldness of air around us. Differs from place
to place. The time of the day and time of the
year also affects air temperature.
WIND VANE

- An instrument that
determines the direction from
which the wind is blowing.
WIND DIRECTION is the
direction from which the wind
is blowing. the four letter E, W,
N, S represents the four
directions: EAST, WEST,
NORTH and SOUTH.
ANEMOMETER

-measures wind speed. the

SPEED of the wind may be
FAST or SLOW.
Sometimes it blows gently
but at the other times it
blows fast.
QUICK CHECK!
A.DIRECTIONS: Answer the following question and write your answer in
your answer sheet. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if it is
not.
1. Anemometer always blows of gently.

2. Wind Vane is an instrument that determines the direction from which the
wind is blowing. Sound can be moidifies.

3. An anemometer measures wind speed. Sound can be bounced.

4. Temperature is the hotness and coldness of air around us.

5. Wind direction is the direction from which the wind is blowing.

B. Direction: Complete the following statement to make it correct. Write
your answer in your answer sheet.

1. An ________ measures the wind speed.

2. The four letters E, W,N, S in a wind vane represent the four directions:
_______, _______, ________, and ________.

3. A ____________ measures the air temperature.

4. A _______ is an instrument that determines the direction from which the

wind is blowing.

5. One of the ways to predict the weather is to measure the ___________.

ANSWERS:

A. B.
1. FALSE 1. ANEMOMETER
2. TRUE 2. EAST, WEST, NORTH, SOUTH
3. TRUE 3. THERMOMETER
4. TRUE 4. WINDWAVE
5. TRUE 5. TEMPERATURE
EXPLORE!
ACTIVITY 1: “HOW CAN YOU TELL THE DIRECTION OF THE
WIND?”
GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What happened to the arrow as the wind blew?

2. Which direction did the tail of your wind vane

take?

3. Did the direction of the wind change after some

time?
DEEPEN!
A. Arrange and Complete Me!
Directions: Arrange the jumbled letters to form the word that is being described in
each number. Write your answer in your answer sheet.
