Network Client

Configuration
Client Configuration
• This client configuration instructions assume that the
network interface card has already been installed and
configured on the computer.,
• Configuration above means the proper installation of
the latest driver for the NIC (network interface card)
Step 1: Accessing the Network
Dial-Up Windows
Configuration Components
• Client for Microsoft Networks
• File and Print Sharing
• Protocol
NetBEUI – non-routable protocol
TCP/IP – a routable protocol that is standard for
the internet.
Protocols
• Only one protocol needs to be configured for the client to
connect to the network
• It is a good practice to have only one protocol active at any
point in time unless the circumstances dictate otherwise
• When multiple protocols are active, the network access
speed may slow down
Completing the Client
Configuration
• At this point, the client configuration is completed ny
pressing the OK button and restarting the computer if asked
to do so.
• The client is now connected to the local area network where
all the computers are now functioning under the NetBEUI
protocol.
NIC Configuration –
Updating
• In necessary the NIC Configuration could also be
updated by pressing the configure button shown in
the previous figure.
• A wizard will help in the updating of the driver.
Checking the Resources
• The resources used by the NIC can be checked:
IRQ (Interrupt request)
I/O Address
Base Memory Address
• IRQ (Interrupt request) line
- allows a hardware device inside of the computer a direct
line to the Microprocessor and tells the Microprocessor to
stop what it is doing and wait until it has further instructions.
• Direct Memory Access
– is a pathway provided by the hardware to allow
direct access to the computer’s memory.
This feature allows devices to bypass the CPU and
write their information directly to the main memory.
• Input / Output
-represents the location in memory that is
designated by the use of various devices to exchange
information amongst themselves and the rest of the
PC.
Typical Networking Components
• Client

Microsoft Networks
Novell Netware
• Services

 File And Print Sharing - complements the Client for Microsoft

Networks service. It allows computers on the network to access
files and printers that you configure for sharing.

 SAP Agent (Service Advertising Protocol) - used mainly for Novel

Network. It routinely advertises the available resources.
• Protocol

TCP/IP
NW link
Etc.
