Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS)
Protocol
• ERAS protocols are followed in bowel surgery, oral intake as soon as 4 hours after surgery
is safe and improves outcome.

• RCTs of early enteral or oral feeding vs nil by mouth show that early feeding reduces the
risk of infection and LOS and is not associated with an increased risk of anastomotic
dehiscence.

• Cochrane review of 14 RCTs (1224 patients) evaluating early EN within 24 hours after
colorectal surgery, early feeding is associated with decreased LOS and decreased several
postoperative complications

• The small bowel recovers between 0 and 24 hours
• The stomach between 24 and 48 hours
• The colon between 48 and 72 hours.
