INTERNATIONAL LAWS AND
REGIONAL ORGANISATIONS

 SADC PROTOCOL
 KYOTO PROTOCOL
 MIKE
 e.t.c
SOIL EROSION

there has been continued soil erosion throughout the past years due to:-
 lack of implementation of agreed strategies.
 lack of sufficient funds for propelling management and conservation
strategies.
SOIL EROSION (cont..)

 lack of a functional monitoring systems.

 information and funds do not reach the local people to such an
extent that the local people who cause soil erosion have no idea of
these agreements and how to stop soil erosion or know of the
negative implications of their farming methods
LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY

 lack of funding for biological conservation

 countries which signed the treaty lack the observational
infrastructure to track the state of their national biodiversity.
 CBD currently rely on data compiled by conservation groups
including IUCN’s red list of threatened species.
 poor investment on observation systems means that there are
still large gaps in the data on local and global diversity.
LAND DEGRADATION

 Weapons that are used during wars for example land mines or the
such as used in Hiroshima and Nakagasaki, destroys the land leaving
it not worth for any life to dwell on it
POACHING

 due to world politics since some countries are not signatories

of these agreements for example Lebanon, Tonga, Iraq and
South Sudan hence they are able to support groups of
poachers.
 There is also lack of funding and support since some
institutions that enforce these agreement lack the necessary
power and resources.
POACHING (cont..)

 There is lack of transparency since some countries are

promoting poaching one way or the other since they buy for
example elephant tusks and these countries are signatories to
these international agreements eg Asian countries.
 Corruption has also put these agreements to no effect since
guns and cyanide poisoning which are being used by
poachers are easily bought in other countries which are also
signatories to the international agreements
INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES

 Due to ineffective internal policies they have allowed the

continued entry and subsequent proliferation of these invasive
species.
 Comprehensive legislation on the treatment of invasive species
has never been enacted, and no single law provides coordination
among government or intergovernmental agencies.
 Some laws are tailored to individual species or narrowly focused
on what is affected by the species. Other laws have a broader
intended purpose and may only peripherally address invasive
species.
 Due to lack of funding and support to eradicate or at least control
the proliferation of these invasive species
SILTATION

 The causes of siltation is mainly poor farming methods

which is most practised in developing nations.
 due to poverty people end up cultivating on streams so as to
have something to eat.
 Overally Corruption pervades the environmental sphere for
two main reasons. First, government officials may control
access to valuable natural resources and can sell this access.
 Second, environmental issues are often given lower priority
in the public policy arena, such that environmental
management, conservation, and enforcement institutions
receive insufficient funding, which creates opportunities for
illegal activities.
 At the highest level, corruption is a form of state capture,
whereby the laws and policies themselves reflect special
interests or are designed to facilitate private gain via illegal
and non-transparent activities; in this sense the corruption is
not necessarily illegal, but it fits the definition of a misuse of
entrusted power.
 Corruption also occurs when government officials have high
levels of discretion combined with a lack of transparency and
accountability, disproportionate influence of wealthy external
interests, and insufficient laws on financial disclosure and
lobbying.
