MEANING

 "Sustainable development
is development that meets the
needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own
needs". This most widely accepted
definition of Sustainable
Development was given by the
Brundtland Commission in its report
‘Our Common Future’ (1987).
INTRODUCTION
 The World Sustainable Development Summit
(WSDS) is the annual flagship event of 
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). 
 The WSDS 2021 will be held under the umbrella
theme of ‘Redefining Our Common Future: Safe and
Secure Environment for All'. 
 The upcoming edition will be held as a hybrid event
scheduled from 10- 12 February, 2021 in New Delhi,
India.
 The World Sustainable Development Summit brings
together Nobel laureates, political leaders, decision-
makers from bilateral and multilateral institutions,
business leaders, high-level functionaries from the
diplomatic corps, scientists and researchers, media
personnel, and members of civil society; on a
common platform to deliberate on issues related to
sustainable development.
OBJECTIVE

 It has been conceptualized as a


single platform to accelerate action
towards sustainable development
 and climate change.
 It aims to bring together global
leaders and thinkers in the fields of
sustainable development, energy and
environment sectors on a common
platform.
FEATURES

The corporate conclave: to brainstorm ideas for conducting businesses in a


sustainable manner.

Sustainable development leadership award(SDLA): it is awarded


every year since 2005 to an eminent global leader .

E-Expo : AN online expo to be held on all 3 days of the submit .

Plenaries: discussions designed around select themes of environmental


import relating to the overall theme of the submit.

 Thematic tracks: the thematic tracks allow
for discussions on finer nuances of the
submit focus areas .
 Virtual sustainable action dialogues : the
discussions held during the pre-events are
carried forward to the main
submit stage where they are
further deliberated by subject experts.
 Use connect: to sensitize young student at
the graduate level about issues of
sustainability and climate change .
India's Efforts Towards Sustainable
Development
 In March 2019, India achieved nearly 100%
electrification through sustainable technologies and
innovative models.
 Through the Ujala Programme, 367 million LED
bulbs were distributed which reduced over 38
million tons carbon dioxide per year.
 Through the PM Ujjwala Yojna, more than 80
million households below the poverty line have
access to clean cooking fuel. India is working
to increase the share of natural gas in India's
energy basket from 6% to 15%.
 The Jal Jeevan Mission has connected over 34
million households with tap connections in 18
months.
 Through conservation efforts, the population of
 lions, tigers, leopards and 
Gangetic river dolphins has gone up.
INDIA' S STAND AT THE EVENT
 India emphasized on climate justice for fighting against
climate change . " Climate Justice" acknowledges that climate
change can have different social, economic, public health and
other adverse impact on under privileged populations.
 Climate justice also means giving the developing
countries enough space to grow .
 India is committed reduce emissions intensity of  GDP by
33% to 35% under the Paris deal from 2005 levels.
 India's steady progress on its commitments to land
degradation neutrality and setting up of 450 gigawatts of
renewable energy generating capacity till 2030 was also
highlighted.
