What is a sentence?
• A sentence is a group of words that expresses a
complete thought.

• A sentence usually tells who or what does something.

• There are three types of sentences


– Simple sentences
– Compound sentences
– Complex sentences
Compound Sentences
• Sometimes two simple sentences can have
similar ideas.

• These sentences can be joined to form a


compound sentence.

• We use coordinating conjunctions when we join


sentences.
Coordinating Conjunctions

Always put a comma (,) before the coordinating


conjunction!
• Related sentences
– I like to eat pizza. I like to
eat spaghetti.

• Compound Sentence
– I like to eat pizza, and I
like spaghetti.
• Related Sentences
– My sister likes to draw. She
does not like to paint.

• Compound Sentence
– My sister likes to draw, but
does not like to paint.

• Related Sentences
– I went to the zoo
yesterday. I saw many
animals.

• Compound Sentence
– I went to the zoo
yesterday, and I saw many
animals.
• Related Sentences
– My teacher brought us
some candy. She did not
give us the candy right
away.

• Compound Sentence
– My teacher brought us
some candy, but did not
give it to us right away.
• Related Sentences
– Mom went to the store
to buy some bread. She
bought some cheese
too.
• Compound Sentence
– Mom went to the store
to buy some bread, and
to buy cheese.
• Related Sentences
– Karen is not going to go
to the beach today. She
is not going to the mall.

• Compound Sentence
– Karen is not going to go
to the beach, or to the
mall today.
