Confidence Outside of God
Job 31:24-28
“If I have made gold my hope,
Or said to fine gold, ‘You are my confidence’;
If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great,
And because my hand had gained much;
If I have observed the [b]sun when it shines,
Or the moon moving in brightness,
So that my heart has been secretly enticed,
And my mouth has kissed my hand;
This also would be an iniquity deserving of judgment,
For I would have denied God who is above.
Confidence Outside of God
Jeremiah 2:13
“For My people have committed two evils: They have abandoned (rejected) Me, the
fountain of living water, And they have carved out their own cisterns, Broken cisterns
That cannot hold water.
When our confidence comes from things, or from any other source except God, we are
digging up broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Our broken “cisterns” (or balon in tagalog) are the things in this world where we put our
confidence into. Money, careers, relationships, etc.
Losing your confidence in God
If we spend too much time and building our confidence on these outside sources apart
from God, it will slowly cause us to lose focus in God and hurt our confidence in Him.
Too focus on careers, ambitions, relationships, self-image…
“If only I had this I would be more confident.” “If only I looked like this I would be
more confident.”
Putting your confidence in the world will enticed you away from God.
Take note of these signs: Fear , doubt, worries, condemnation, etc..
Losing your confidence in God
We begin to lose our confidence in God when we lose focus on who God is to us.
“When we are too focused on our sickness, we may lose focus that our God is our Healer”
“When we are too focused on our needs, we may lose focus that our God is our Provider”
“When we are too focused on our fears, worries, problems , we may lose focus that our God is
our Refuge and Strength”
Our sins will cause us to lose confidence in God, unless we repent.
1 John 3:21
Beloved, if our heart does not convict us [of guilt], we have confidence [complete
assurance and boldness] before God;
Building your confidence in God
If these negative thoughts, feelings, circumstances, haunts you, keep reminding yourself
of who God is. Meditate on His character and His attributes.
God is my Provider. God is My Healer. God is my Banner. God is Faithful. God is a good
God. God is Merciful. God is full of grace and mercy. God is my Refuge and Strength.
God is my salvation.
Get closer to God. Build you personal relationship with Him. The more you know a
person, the more you will build confidence in them. Our confidence is grown out of our
dependence upon God.
Confidence in God produces courage
Courage or Confidence?
Courage is God-confidence in you
If our confidence is placed in God instead of in ourselves, our faith in God grows, so
does our courage.
Psalm 56:3-4
When I am afraid, I will put my trust and faith in You. In God, whose word I praise; In
God I have put my trust; I shall not fear. What can mere man do to me?
Self Confidence vs God-confidence (Courage)
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the
day of Christ. 1 Samuel 17:14-47
Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and
find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16
Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the Lord your God is the one who
goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6
For the Lord will be your confidence. And will keep your foot from being caught. Proverbs 3:26
In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And his children will have refuge. Proverbs 14:26
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord
your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
HOLD FAST
Hebrews 3:6
“but Christ is faithful as a Son over His [Father’s] house. And we are His house if
we hold fast our confidence and sense of triumph in our hope [in Christ].”
No matter the situation, we must not lose our confidence in God. It is His Word that sets
us free. The Word of God gives us confidence. God desires believers to be confident in
Him because He is faithful to keep His Word.
