How concrete is made
• Concrete is made with mixing measured amount of cement , coarse aggregate and fine
aggregate and water. In which 65 -80 % of mix consists of Aggregates

• Coarse aggregate like crushed rock, gravel or screenings, should be angular, graded,
strong and hard to withstand wear and tear.

• Not more than 8% silt should be present in fine and coarse aggregates, grading and size
of aggregates will impact strength and durability of concrete

• Aggregates should be stored where they will remain clean, separated from other
materials and dry. If the aggregates are wet, less water should be used in the mix.

• Cement motor which is prepared using fine aggregate should be mixed in parts and
should be applied within stipulated time of 2hrs.

• When cement is exposed to air, the usage of entire quantity should be completed for
the day and should not be prolonged for next working day.

17
How concrete is made
• While casting any kind of RC C works proper integration of scaffoldings
with no gaps and proper support should be maintained

• When concrete is placed in plastic stage, It can be molded to any

required shape

• After few hours i.e. 2-3 hours after placing concrete, it should not be
disturbed as critical reactions takes place and bonding between the
compounds of concrete happens

• After 10- 12 hours of time at hardened stage, concrete requires initial

curing

• Never try to make a mixture more workable by just adding more

water because this lowers the strength and durability of concrete.
Only use cement paste for more workable concrete

• Too much fine aggregate gives a sticky mix.

Too much coarse aggregate gives a harsh or boney mix.
18
Segregation and cover for concrete

• SEGREGATION is when the coarse and fine aggregate,

and cement paste, become separated. If placing
concrete straight from a wheelbarrow bucket, concrete
truck etc. place vertically and never let the concrete fall
more than one-and-a-half metres.

• Cover and Bar chair should be provided to

reinforcement at all stages of RCC concrete to prevent
movement of reinforcement during concreting and
avoid rusting.

• Use of cover for different parts of construction

How cement is stored
• STORAGE Cement should be stored off the ground in a well-aired, clean, dry place.

• Wrapping the cement bags in plastic sheets gives extra protection.

• To maintain the quality of cement and ensure freshness, use the "first in, first out"
(FIFO) principle. This means using the oldest stock first and rotating the inventory to
prevent the cement from sitting unused for extended periods.

• Stacking of cement bags should not exceed 12 nos

• Cement shelf life is 3 months from the date of manucacturing

• Markings on Cement Bag Batch No.

Compaction of concrete

• Compaction is the shaking or vibrating of the concrete to liquefy it and expel any trapped air. By compaction we can
reduce voids and entrapped air and excess water from concrete which will result durability and strength.

• Internal vibration is done with a mechanical vibrator or poker vibrator. The POKER is put into concrete and vibrates it
from the inside. Put the poker into the concrete QUICKLY. Take the poker out very SLOWLY otherwise a hole, or weak spot,
may be left in the concrete.

• HOW LONG TO COMPACT For concrete of average workability (i.e. slump of 80 mm) with a poker size between 25–75
mm, concrete should usually be vibrated for between 5 and 15 seconds.

22
Curing and methods
• Curing means to keep concrete MOIST for some time (typically 8–12 days). By keeping
concrete moist the bond between the paste and the aggregates gets stronger. Concrete
doesn’t harden properly if it is left to dry out quickly.

• Timely curing will prevent concrete from shrinkage cracks, makes concrete stronger and
durable. During hot weathers mist spray is advisable. Mostly after placing concrete
initial curing should be done by 10 to 12 Hrs.

• Concrete can be cured by construction of ponds which are filled with water, Placing
gunny bags, using plastic sheets and using curing compounds.

23
Defects in concreting and remedies

• During hot weathers Use SHADE to keep all materials out of direct sun and
keep the aggregates MOIST.

• Using cement paste or slurry before placing concrete helps in better bonding

• Crazing in concrete is observed due to high temperatures and low humidity

conditions. To prevent Crazing timely mist spraying of water is the best
practicing method to avoid Crazing.

• We also observe Dusting problems on surface of concrete where fine powder

on the concrete surface which comes off on your fingers. Reason behind Crazing
dusting is due to finishing before the bleed water has dried, finishing during the
rain , not curing properly, or the surface is drying too quickly and Concrete of
too low a grade for the end use

• To prevent dusting Let any bleed water dry up before trowelling or, in cold
conditions, remove the water. Cure correctly and do not add excess water
before placing of concrete. Dusting
24
Defects in concreting and remedies

• EFFLORESCENCE is a white crystalline deposit sometimes found on the surface

of concrete. It is caused due to presence of mineral salts in water, brick and
sand. To prevent efflorescence use of clean, slat-free water and bricks free
from dissolved slats will help to avoid efflorescence.

• Efflorescence can be removed by dry brushing and washing with clean water
or wash with a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid. E.g. Imli of 1 Kg can be used
by dissolving it in 10 lit luck warm water and leaving the solution for 24 hrs.
Two coats should be applied with a gap of one or two day to prevent
Efflorescence

• HONEYCOMBING is coarse, stony surface with air voids causes due to poor
compaction, segregation during placing or paste leakage from forms. We can
avoid honeycombing by using a better mix design, taking care during placing
concrete to avoid segregation, compacting concrete properly and with good
watertight formwork.

• Moderate honeycombing can be repaired by applying rich cement motor paste

25
and for greater depth, the concrete may need to be removed and replaced.
Defects in concreting and remedies
• Plastic Settlement Cracks are formed soon after concrete is placed, while it is still plastic
and they get bigger as concrete dries and shrinks and tend to follow the lines of
reinforcement.

• Correction is to Re-vibrate the concrete and Re-trowel the surface

•. Plastic Shrinkage Cracks are formed on very hot days or in low humidity
and even moderate winds. They are more common in summer but may
occur in winter.

• Plastic shrinkage cracks appear in lines, roughly parallel or in a crazed

haphazard way. They are usually 300–600 mm long but may be between
25 mm and 2 m in length.

• Plastic Shrinkage Cracks can be prevented by keeping all materials cool

on hot days. Place, compact and cure as quickly as possible on hot days
so concrete won’t dry out. Try to place at the cooler times of the day.

• Repair Cracks may be closed by reworking the plastic concrete. 26
