Automated plant

watering system
Design Situation
• Plants play an important role in improving the quality of life, but they
require regular watering to thrive. Manually watering plants can be a time-
consuming and inconvenient task, especially for people with busy
schedules, or those who are going on vacation. Additionally, watering
plants in large gardens or remote locations can also be challenging,
especially including large farms or botanical gardens which require
delicate and intricate attention to maintain
Solution:
• An Automated Plant Watering System can solve these
problems by providing an efficient and effective way to
water plants. The system utilizes soil moisture sensors to
measure the moisture level in the soil, a watering
mechanism to deliver water to the plants, and a control
circuit to turn on the watering mechanism based on the soil
moisture readings.
Design Problems faced from the situation
• Time-consuming task: Manually watering plants can be a time-consuming task, especially for those with
busy schedules.
• Convenient for vacations: People who are going on vacation may struggle to water their plants manually,
leading to the need for an automated system.
• Watering large gardens: Watering plants in large gardens can be a challenging task, especially if the
garden is in a remote location.
• Inconsistent watering: Inconsistent watering can lead to plant death or stunted growth, making an
automated system desirable.
• Cost-effective: An automated system can be more cost-effective in the long-term, as it reduces the need for
manual labour and eliminates the risk of over or under-watering plants.
• Consistent watering: An automated system can provide consistent watering to plants, ensuring that they
receive the right amount of water at the right time.
• Environment-friendly: An automated system can help conserve water, reducing the impact on the
environment and saving money on water bills.
Design Brief
• To design a system that automates the watering process for indoor or
outdoor plants. Traditional manual watering methods can be time-
consuming, unreliable, and wasteful. People who are busy or frequently
away from their plants face the risk of their plants dying from lack of
water.
An Automated Plant Watering System that can water plants as per their
needs, ensuring they receive the right amount of water at the right time,
without any human intervention.
Existing ideas from the internet
• Timer-based systems: These systems have a timer that can be programmed to
dispense water at specific intervals.
• Soil moisture sensor-based systems: These systems use soil moisture sensors to
determine when to water the plants. The sensors send a signal to the system when
the soil is dry, triggering the watering process.
• Drip irrigation systems: These systems use a series of valves, tubing, and drippers
to deliver water directly to the root zone of the plants.
• Smart watering systems: These systems use advanced sensors and algorithms to
determine the ideal amount of water needed by each plant and adjust the watering
schedule accordingly.
• IoT-based systems: These systems use internet of things (IoT) technology to
connect the watering system to a mobile app or other remote control.
Requirements of this project
• Accurate measurement of soil moisture: The system must accurately measure the moisture level
in the soil using soil moisture sensors to ensure that plants receive the right amount of water
• Effective watering mechanism: The system must deliver water to the plants using a watering
mechanism that is efficient and effective, such as a pump or dripper system.
• Automated control circuit: The system must have a control circuit that automatically turns on
the watering mechanism based on the soil moisture readings, reducing the need for manual
intervention.
• User-friendly interface: The system must have a user-friendly interface that allows users to set
the desired soil moisture level and monitor the status of the system, making it easy to use.
• Durability: The system must be durable enough to withstand typical environmental conditions
and be used repeatedly, ensuring that it is a long-term solution.(large farms/gardens)
