SIDE STAND DETECTOR FOR

MANUAL TRANSMISSION
MOTORCYCLE DEVELOPMENT
AND EVALUATION
BY: AL-FATAH M. MALON
Introduction
 Nowadays, the two-wheeler has become an essential mode of transportation.
Although two-wheelers are simple to use, they can also cause an accident,
One of the most common issues experienced when using the side stand is
irresponsibility or carelessness in kicking back the side stand. The
irresponsibility may be due to absence of mind, urgency, divergence in
concentration, and a few other rears position released position." Failing to
kick back the side stand for any of the mentioned reasons above may hit
result to an accident of the vehicle and motorists involved in the accident,
sometimes fatal. To ensure safety of the rider, during absence of mind,
negligence, urgency or Carelessness. To avoid this problem, the researcher
came up with the study and create a motorcycle side stand detector for
manual transmission.
The general objective of this study is to design and develop
a side stand detector for Manual transmission motorcycle
specifically, the study aims to:

(a) develop a device that detects if side stand of a motorcycle is

lifted up or not,
(b) incorporate an alarm feature to the device that will give
warning when the user starts the motorcycle engine while the
side stand is not lifted up properly and
(c) to evaluate its functionality.
METHODOLOGY
Materials
The following materials were used in developing the design and
gathering data.

BUZZER was used for outputting sound.

LED was used for outputting signal light.
JUMPER WIRE was used to connect the circuit of the device.
MOTORCYCLE was used to test the functionality of the device.
BATTERY was used to power the device.
LIMIT SWITCH was used to determine the position of a side stand.
Development of the device
 Figure 2 illustrates the device flowchart. The sequence of operations to be
performed by the device is explained in detail below:
 The system is initiated by using the key of the motorcycle to turn it on.
 The engine starter button is pushed.
 If the starter button is pushed while the side stand is either not lifted up or not
fully lifted up, the alarm consisting of a buzzer and LED will be triggered.
Additionally, the engine will not start.
 On the other hand, if the starter button is pushed while the side stand is
properly lifted up, the engine will start, and the motorcycle will be ready to go.
 A limit switch will be used to check the status of both the starter button and the
side stand sensor, ensuring that the system accurately detects the position of
the side stand.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The development and evaluation of the motorcycle side stand detector yielded
the following results:
The limit switch accurately detected the position of the side stand, reliably
indicating whether it was lifted or not.
The alarm system, comprising a buzzer and LED, effectively provided a warning
signal when the side stand was not properly lifted when starting the motorcycle
engine.

The device's low-cost design and utilization of readily available materials make it
easily implementable and accessible to motorcycle riders.
The discussion of the results highlighted the importance of addressing the issue
of side stand negligence to enhance rider safety. The developed device offers a
practical solution that can be integrated into motorcycles to minimize the
occurrence of accidents caused by this common oversight. Furthermore, the
results underscored the need for awareness campaigns and educational
initiatives to promote responsible riding practices and the importance of side
stand retraction.
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In this study, a motorcycle side stand detector for manual transmission motorcycles
was designed and developed. The device incorporated a limit switch to detect the
position of the side stand, and an alarm system comprising a buzzer and LED was
implemented to provide a warning when the motorcycle engine was started while the
side stand was not properly lifted. The study aimed to address the issue of accidents
caused by riders forgetting to retract the side stand.
Based on the development and evaluation of the motorcycle side stand detector, the
following conclusions were drawn: The device successfully detected the position of
the side stand, providing a reliable indication of whether it was lifted or not, the
alarm system effectively alerted the rider when attempting to start the motorcycle
engine with the side stand not properly lifted, contributing to enhanced safety and
accident prevention and the device's design and implementation were cost-effective
and practical, utilizing commonly available materials and components.
Conduct Further Performance Testing: Future researchers should conduct more
extensive performance testing of the motorcycle side stand detector under various
real-world conditions. This can include testing the device on different motorcycle
models, evaluating its performance in different weather conditions, and assessing its
durability and reliability over an extended period of use. This will provide more
comprehensive data on the device's effectiveness and help identify any potential
limitations or areas for improvement.
