INTRODUCTION

Significance of the Study

A motorcycle, often called a motorbike, bike, or cycle, is a two- or three-

wheeled motor vehicle. Motorcycle design varies greatly to suit a range of

different purposes: long distance travel, commuting, cruising, sport including

racing, and off-road riding. The term motorcycle has different legal

classifications depending on jurisdiction. There are three major forms of

motorcycle: street, off-road, and dual purpose. Within these types, there are

many sub-types of motorcycles for different purposes. There is often

a racing counterpart to each type, such as road racing and street bikes,

or motocross and dirt bikes. street bikes include cruisers, sport

bikes, scooters and mopeds, and many other types. Off-road motorcycles

include many types designed for dirt-oriented racing classes such

as motocross and are not street legal in most areas. Dual purpose machines

like the dual-sport style are made to go off-road but include features to make

them legal and comfortable on the street as well. Each configuration offers

either particular advantage or broad capability, and each design generates a

different riding posture.

The terms suicide clutch, and suicide shifter or jockey shifter, refer to

a motorcycle's foot-operated clutch and hand-shifter to change gears, Foot

2

clutches (rocker clutches) and hand shifters (tank shifts) were create on early

motorcycle designs from around the turn of the 20th Century to the 1940s or

50s, and reappearing on modern retro designed custom

motorcycles and choppers. Modern motorcycles do not require removing a

hand from the handlebars to shift gears, using only the fingers for the clutch

and the toes of one foot to select gears. In contrast, the fanciful slang "suicide"

was applied to designs where the rider removes one hand to change gears, or

cannot put both feet on the ground while using a foot clutch to disengage the

transmission. Sometimes the shifter is referred to as a "jockey shifter" while

the foot clutch is called a "suicide clutch".

Motorcycle is one of the most usable transportation nowadays. Riding a

motorcycle has so many benefits on us especially on our daily life because it

helps us reach our destination in just a short period of time depends on how

far the place is. A semi-automatic motorcycle is one of the usable type of

motorcycle nowadays especially the one with no clutch lever like honda xrm.

Since using a semi-automatic motorcycle requires the use of hands and foot to

operate, some people are not capable of driving this kind of motorcycle

because of their condition which is having a left leg or left foot disability since

they are not capable for shifting the gears of their motorcycle. This kind of

problem is need to solve since people who want to drive a motorcycle cannot

drive due to their conditions.

3 3

Hence, as a solution to this problem, this study was pursued and

develop an assistive device which help/aid the driver to shift the gear of a

motorcycle with the use of buttons so that a person with leg or foot disability

be able to drive a motorcycle without using his/her foot for shifting the gear.

The general objective of this study is to design and develop an

Automatic Motorcycle Gear Shifter for a Person with Leg or Foot Disability.

Specifically, the study aimed to develop an assistive device which will help/aid

the driver to shift the gear of a motorcycle with the use of buttons and evaluate

the functionality of the device.

Operational Definition of Terms

The following terms are operationally defined to understand how they

will be used in the study.

Motorcycle will be used to test the device.

Suicide clutch is mounted on the left side of the motorcycle's forward foot

controls where the servo will be attached.

Person with disability (PWD) are those who have long-term physical, mental,

intellectual or sensory losses

Push button is a button that will be used to trigger the servomotor through

pressing it.

Arduino used for controlling electronics.

4

Servomotor will be used to change the gear position of the motorcycle.

Connecting wires allows an electrical current to travel from one point on a

circuit to another, since electricity needs a medium through which to

move.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework shown in Fig. 1 shows the relationship

among three significant variables. The first block represents the problem. The

researcher assumes to solve the problem by developing an automatic gear

shifter for PWD (Leg or foot). The third block represents the outcome of the

study after developing the device.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presets the literature, studies conducted, and the

readings significantly related to this present study. Hence, they serve and

provide essential background study.

Motorcycle transmission by George A. Tatge

The transmission on a motorcycle is characterized by three or

four gear shift positions on one side of a neutral position wherein the gear ratio

is progressively higher as the shift is made away from neutral and also the

presence of a low gear lower than the other gears lying on the other side of

neutral position. Ordinarily a hand lever is relied upon to shift gears, the lever

being customarily located in an upwardly extending position at the side of the

mid-portion of the frame in front of the rider. The clutch is thrown out and in by

manipulation of a foot pedal. In operating a gear shift of the conventional sort it

is necessary in shifting up in gear ratio for the operator or rider to remove one

hand from the handle bar to thus manipulate the gear shift lever. In other

words, the rider must steer with one hand while shifting from neutral to low, to

second and then to the higher gears. As the vehicle is accelerating under

those circumstances the rider or operator does not have maximum control

over the vehicle.

6

Gear Shifting Crank by Charles W. Lundiquist 7

It is a major object of the invention to provide a stirrup type device

which allows shoe entry into retained position from either lateral or longitudinal

directions, and facilitates both up and down shifting in a safe manner.

Basically, the device of the invention is usable in combination with a gear

shifting crank member adapted to extend lengthwise alongside the cyclist's

shoe, and comprises

Foot-Actuated Gearshift for a Motorcycle by Owell G. Foster

A foot-actuated gearshift for a motorcycle is disclosed wherein a lever

rigidly connected at one of its ends to a rotatable shaft includes a foot pedal

extending laterally from its distal end portion and a toe pedal which extends

over the foot pedal, wherein the toe portion of a shoe can fit between the foot

pedal and the toe pedal and the toe portion of the foot can be lifted against the

toe pedal to pivot the lever upwardly or depressed against the foot pedal to

pivot the lever downwardly.

7

Shifter Handle for a Motorcycle or ATV by David Thompson 8

A shifter handle for a motorcycle or ATV which has an integral clutch

release lever, operable by the fingers of the same hand used for shifting the

gears. Being mounted in either the jockey position, adjacent to the seat, or the

tank shift position which is mounted vertically from the shifter pedal shaft, the

clutch controls are removed from the handlebars making said clutch release

lever integral to the handle used for shifting the gears. Trends in the custom

cruiser industry are to remove the visible controls from the handlebar area for

aesthetic purposes. There are important applications such as the area of

modification for the handicapped. Spinal cord injured persons with little or no

use of the legs, or amputees where a foot shift device is impossible to use

need no longer be prohibited from enjoying riding this type machine. The hand

shift devices of the past are no longer precarious or dangerous with both

operations in the same hand. This does away with the negative aspects of the

jockey shifters of the past where it was difficult to put the clutching foot down

on the ground for support. This invention allows for the use of either the stock

clutch release components or for upgrade to hydraulic components to actuate

the clutch release mechanism.

Adjustable Rear Brake Pedal Assembly for a Motorcycle by Cory

McWorter

A motorcycle is described which includes adjustable foot controls to

accommodate different rider sizes. The adjustable rear brake pedal assembly

for a motorcycle includes a base plate, a brake pedal and a foot rest attached

to a first motorcycle frame stud via a threaded connector. An adjustable rear

brake pedal assembly for the motorcycle includes a base plate, a brake pedal

and a foot rest attached to a second motorcycle frame stud via a threaded

connector. Each base plates includes a groove on its inward side that is sized

to accept its respective motorcycle frame stud and to allow the base plate to

be selectively positioned relative to threaded holes spaced along the

motorcycle

frame studs.

A Foot Actuated Gear Shifting Device by Kenneth G. Girty

A foot actuated gear shifting device is provided for a motorcycle which

is compatible with current motorcycle structures such that it could be included

as standard equipment or be utilized as an accessory attachment to simplify

the shifting action accomplished by one foot of the operator. The structure of

the invention includes a unitary foot pedal adapted to be installed in the

normal position where the operator rests his left foot. The pedal is adapted to
9

support the entire foot of the operator and pivot about a point beneath the foot

arch. The forward end of the pedal is connected to the outer end of the

motorcycle's gear shift lever such that shifting action can be accomplished by

the operator causing the pedal to rock forwardly or rearward; consistent with

the direction in which he wishes to move the gear shift lever. The device of the

invention is preferably adapted for attachment to the foot rest component

which is standard on most motorcycles, and preferably includes adjustment

means by which the operator can selectively vary the upper surface

configuration of the pedal in accordance with a particular shoe style
