HEALTH AND FITNESS 4 (TEAM SPORTS) MODULE 1: LESSON 2 PE DEPARTMENT Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
• Identify the facilities and equipment used in basketball.
• Illustrate the Facilities and Equipment used in playing Basketball. Picture Analysis
• What is the picture all about?
• What is the importance of having the facilities and equipment during play? S & EQUIPME COURT • A standard international basketball court is an indoor, rectangular court with dimensions 50 feet × 94 feet. • Courts at schools may be smaller. The court is divided into two equal playing areas, one for each team. Various markings are painted on the court. CENTER CIRCLE • The only two players permitted to enter this area prior to the tipoff are the players contesting the jump ball (usually but not always centers). Both players jump when the referee throws the ball in the air, each attempting to tap the ball into the hands of a player of their own team. THREE POINT LINE • The three-point line is the line that separates the two-point area from the three point area; any shot converted beyond this line counts as three points. If the shooting player steps on the line, it is counted as two points. Any foul made in the act of shooting beyond the three-point line would give the player three free throws if the shot does not go in, and one if it does. BASKET • A hoop or basket with net around its circumference of 18 inches diameter is firmly hung horizontally from a rectangular backboard of 3.5 feet height and 6 feet width on either sides of the court. The rim of the hoop is 10 feet above the ground. The backboard in various international competitions is transparent for better visibility. BALL • Basketball is an orange-colored and rough-textured spherical ball with black contours usually made of leather or composite tough materials. • The ball is bounced continuously (dribbling), thrown through the air to other players (passing), and towards the basket (shooting). A typical basketball must be very durable and easy to hold on to ACTIVITY #2 Facilities & Equipment 1. Illustrate by drawing the different facilities and equipment used in playing Basketball, consider the correct measurement and placement of the facilities and equipment. Use a short bond paper for the illustration, one bond paper per equipment. 2. Make your illustration clear and vivid 3. Use rubrics as your guide in doing this activity.
