Control Hazards and Risks
and Risks
Evaluate hazards and risk
How likely that it is a hazard
that will cause harm.
How serious that harm is likely
to be.
How often (and how many)
workers are exposed.
Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)
Are designed to be worn by a
nail technician or salon
workers to protect them from
risk of injury or illness.
Advantages of wearing PPE at work:
To prevent damage to workers’ nails and skin.
To prevent skin from absorbing potentially
harmful ingredients which may cause skin
allergies and irritation.
So as not to generate a lot dust, it may be
necessary to wear dust mask to minimize
breathing in particles.
To protect the wearer’s face from chemical or
biological agents.
Electrical hazards:
Scattered or frayed cords, Risks
Damaged or unattended Electric shock
electrical equipment in use.
Electrocution
Worn out electrical wiring.
Over heated appliances or
Fire
equipment.
Electrical hazards
Control measures:
Always check any equipment before use.
When cleaning equipment, SWITCH OFF
the power and pull out the plug and not
the cord.
Do not run too many pieces of equipment
from one socket.
Chemical hazards:
Risks
Nail polish Respirator yproblems
Nail polish remover
Chronic lung disease
Disinfecting and
Skin irritation
sanitizing solutions
Poisoning
Cancer
Chemical hazards
Control measures:
Good ventilation
Provide separate eating/drinking
amenities for employees.
Ensuring appropriate safety signs,
training and MSDS labels.
Use appropriate PPE.
Safety hazards:
Risks
Spillson floors Slipping
Clutter
Tripping
Pointed or sharp tools
Falling
and equipment
Cuts and
wounds
Slips, Trips, Falls
Control measures:
Clean up spills right away.
Use mat on slippery floors
Avoid materials being placed in aisles/walkways.
Improve cleaning method to prevent build up of
grease/detergent.
Fire Safety
Control measures:
Keep all escape routes and fire exits clear.
Firefighting equipment must be available, located
in specified area.
Switch off and unplug all electrical appliances
before leaving the workplace.
Store products, particularly aerosols away from
flames or sources of heat.
Biological hazards:
Blood Risks
or body fluids
Fungi Skin irritation or
Bacteria and viruses
allergies
Infections
Contaminated wastes
Infectious diseases
like Tuberculosis,
Hepatitis, HIV.
Biological Hazards
Control measures:
Cleaning – removal of soil and reduction in
number of micro-organisms by washing with
soap and warm water.
Disinfection – Complete immersion of
tools/implements in a high grade disinfectant.
Sterilization – total destruction of all micro-
organisms and their spores.
Ergonomics hazards:
Improper posture Risks
Inadequate lighting Body pains
Improperly adjusted Muscle strain
chairs/workstation Back injury
Sitting for long period of time
Cramps
Awkward movement
Numbness in some
Repetitive
parts of the body.
Ergonomics – the study of how equipment
and furniture can be arranged in order that people
can do work more efficiently and comfortably.
Control measures:
Correct position of hand
while giving manicure.
Ergonomics
Control measures:
Correct position of
pedicurist
Keep your back straight and
supported while giving
pedicure service.
Group activity:
What are hazards found in each areas.
