COMMON

HAZARDS AND
RISKS
Occupational Health and Safety

Why is OHS
important in
the
workplace?
What could be possible effect of sitting straight
while working on a client and sitting in a slouch
position while working on a client?
Hazard/Harm
• It is the chance or probability that a person will
be harmed or will experience an adverse health
effect if exposed to a hazard.
• Is anything at workplace with potential to cause
harm – injury, illness to people , damage to
property or harm to the environment.
Risk

•It is an adverse health effect on

something or someone under certain
conditions at work.
Common Hazards in a Beauty salon
• Electrical hazards – common accidents can
result from contact with faulty electrical
equipment that may have become “live” or
from contact with worn or damaged power
cords and switches, the presence of water in
the salon increases the risk of electrocution or
injury.
Common Hazards in a Beauty salon
• Chemical hazard – may result to skin irritations
and respiratory problems. Information about
chemical hazards can be obtain from:
Label
Material safety data sheet (MSDS) – provide
information on how to properly handle, store,
discard and care for potentially hazardous
chemicals.
Common Hazards in a Beauty salon
• Biological hazard – Unsafe or unhygienic
practices in the beauty salon may affect the
health of customers and workers that may lead
to exposure to biological hazards that cause
infectious diseases.

people at work. The goal is to reduce stress
and eliminate injuries and disorders
associated with the overuse of muscles, bad
posture and repeated tasks.
Common Hazards in a Beauty salon
• Safety hazards – People slip and trip on
slippery, rough or uneven surfaces and
may fall down from stairs or ladders.
Group Activity:
Each group will brainstorm to
identify the risks associated with
ergonomics, biological hazards,
chemical hazards, safety hazards
and electrical hazards. Choose
your group reporter for today.
• Each group will
have 60 seconds
to present their
out.
Identifying workplace
hazards means looking
for those things at your
workplace that has the
potential to cause
harm to a person,
property and to the
environment.
What did you learn?
Identify what type of hazards are the following: Ergonomics,
Chemical, Biological, safety hazards, electrical hazards.

• 2. Octopus wiring
• 3. A chair without back support
• 4. Uncleaned manicure implements
• 5. Spilled water on the floor
