instructions below to successfully enjoy the objectives of this kit. Have
fun!

LESSON 4 : Create Basic Nail Designs
EXPECTATIONS
You will learn the skills in creating basic Nail Designs. Specifically, this
module will help you to:
1. Explain and illustrate the different basic designs.
2. Apply skills learned in creating nail designs.

Directions: Label the Parts of a Fingernail by writing the answer in the boxes.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The English word MANICURE comes from the French word manucure,
meaning "care of the hands", Likewise, the English word PEDICURE comes from
the Latin words pes ( pedis), for "foot", and cura, for "care".

The final steps in caring for the hands and feet are the application of Nail
Polish which will make them clean and attractive. Having a beautiful finger nails
will surely enhance the appearance of your hands.
Developing your skill in performing basic nail design will greatly help in
creating your own Nail Art Design.

TOPIC: Basic Nail Designs

Objectives:
1. Learn the techniques in applying basic nail designs
2. Create basic nail designs.

LEARNING CONTENT

A. Plain Manicure- It is the traditional application of nail polish to the


entire nail plate.

Procedure:
1. Apply base coat- Begin with little finger of one hand. Repeat polish
application on the other hand
2. Apply two coats of polish- Use light long strokes from nail base to free
edge, Apply polish to the middle of the nail first and then to the sides,
Repeat second coat of polish to both hands and remove excess polish
around nail with a cotton tipped orangewood stick
3. Apply top coat- Apply a top coat over the entire nail plate.

B. Half Moon- Half moon is a style that involves applying of nail polish over
the whole nail plate except the area of lunula.

Procedure:
1. Apply base coat
2. Apply white or platinum nail polish and leave for a few minutes to dry.
3. Apply colored polish from one side to the other side of the nail

following the shape of the lunula. Repeat the application of the nail
polish if necessary.
4. Remove excess polish from the skin .
5. Apply top coat.

B. Half Moon with Tip- It involves the application of colored polish over
the whole nail plate except the area of lunula and tip of the nail

Procedure:
1. Apply base coat
2. Apply white or platinum nail polish and leave for a few minutes to dry
3. Apply colored nail polish from one side to the other side of the nail to
form a half-moon, leaving the lunula of the nail Leave the part of the free
edge. The free edge should be seen
4. Remove excess polish
5. Apply top coat.

C. French Manicure or Tip Design- It is a design which involves the


application of colored polish over the whole part of the nail except the area of
the free-edge.

Procedure:
1. Apply base coat and leave for a few minutes to dry.
2. Apply white or platinum nail polish and leave for a few minutes to dry.
3. Apply colored nail polish from one side to the other side of the nail following
the shape of the free- edge. Repeat the application of nail polish if necessary
4. Remove excess polish
5. Apply top coat.

French Manicure or Tip design - Variation no. 2


Procedure:
1. Apply base coat and leave for a few minutes
2. Apply a coat of translucent pink polish over your entire nail.
3. With the use of white or colored nail polish, draw a thin line over the tip of
the nail following the shape of the free edge of the nail. Apply second coating if
necessary.
4. Remove excess polish.
5. Apply top coat.

Elephant tusk- Elephant tusk is a style that involves the


application of nail polish to create S curve, leaving a slightly
larger gap along the nail walls.

Procedure:

1. Apply white or platinum nail polish and leave for a few


minutes to dry.
2. Apply colored nail polish creating a half circle design at
the inner side of the nail as you continue it to form S-like.
3. Fill up the other side to complete the design.
4. Remove excess polish.
5. Seal with a top coat.

Directions: Arrange chronologically the Steps in French Manicure or Tip
design. Use numbers 1 to 5 on the space provided for.

POST TEST

Directions: Read the following steps in basic Nail Design. Encircle THUMBS
UP  if it is a correct step and THUMBS DOWN  if it is not.

1.   Apply base coat first.

2.   Colored Nail Polish must be applied after the top coat

3.   Create an “S” design in Half Moon with Tip

4.   Follow the shape of the Lunula in creating a Half Moon

5.   Remove excess nail polish
