Some Facts…………

Heart Risk

1. Cardiovascular disease is the leading global cause of death,


accounting for 17.3 million deaths per year, a number that is
expected to grow to more than 23.6 million by 2030.
2. India No.1 in cardiac patients:  10% population affected,
US/Europe No. 2: 7% each; China: 4%.
3. WHO says that since 1980, the number of Indians suffering from
high BP rose by 87 million. (latest study published 2015)
4. High BP grew 39.9% for women as against 59% for men. High
BP, smoking, high body mass index and diabetes were the top
risk factors for death (latest study published 2015)
5. Highest growth among young executives:  1 of 8 is under 40

Obesity/ Diabetes
1. In 2008, an estimated 1.46 billion adults worldwide were
overweight or obese. The prevalence of obesity was estimated
at 205 million men and 297 million women.

to be 6.4 percent in 2010 and is projected to be 7.7 percent in

Eating patterns have changed dramatically in recent


decades. Research from 1971 to 2004 showed that
women consumed an average of 22 percent more
calories in that span and men consumed and average
of 10 percent more.

The average woman eats about 1,900 calories a day


and the average man has nearly 2,700 according to the
government figures.

REAL FACTS………
The results are fascinating: 20% of all deaths of people 35
and older were attributed to a lack of physical activity. That's more
deaths than can be attributed to smoking. Looking at specific diseases,
the risk of dying from cancer increased 45% for men and 28% for
women due to lack of physical activity. The risk of dying from
respiratory ailments was 92% higher for men and 75% higher for
women. The risk of dying from heart disease was 52% higher for men
and 28% higher for women, all due to a lack of physical activity.

All it takes to achieve most of these health benefits is


accumulating 30 minutes of moderate activity each day.

Definition of YOGA
“Yogash chitta vritti nirodhah:” 

“Yoga is the restraint (control, mastery) of the modifications


(changes, movement, thought-forms) of the mind field.”

This is the most fundamental of the yoga sutras; it is the yoga


definition. It defines Yoga, Union, Self realization, Mind Control
and Enlightenment.

The more technical sense of the term "yoga", describing a


system of meditation or contemplation with the aim of the
cessation of mental activity and the attaining of a "supreme state“.

Astanga yoga
Patanjali's writing also became the basis for a system referred to as
"Ashtanga Yoga" ("Eight-Limbed Yoga"). This eight-limbed concept
derived from the 29th Sutra of the 2nd book, and is a core characteristic
of practically every Raja yoga variation taught today. The Eight Limbs
are:

Yama (The five "abstentions"): non-violence, non-lying, non-


covetousness, non-sensuality, and non-possessiveness.

Niyama (The five "observances"): purity, contentment, austerity, study,


and surrender to god.

Asana: Literally means "seat", and in Patanjali's Sutras refers to the


seated position used for meditation.

Pranayama ("Suspending Breath"): Prāna, breath, "āyāma", to restrain
or stop. Also interpreted as control of the life force.
Pratyahara ("Abstraction"): Withdrawal of the sense organs from
external objects.

Dharana ("Concentration"): Fixing the attention on a single object.


Dhyana ("Meditation"): Intense contemplation of the nature of the
object of meditation.
Samādhi ("Liberation"): merging consciousness with the object of
meditation.
