 A pregnancy is divided into three phases called trimesters.


 1. The first trimester is from conception to the end of week 13. The first sign
of pregnancy may be a missed menstrual period.
 2. The second trimester is from week 14 to the end of week 26.The time when
most women start to look pregnant and may begin to wear maternity clothes.
 3. The third trimester is from week 27 to the giving birth. Women belly gets
bigger, sleep problems are common during this period.
MATERNAL CHANGES AND SYMPTOMS THROUGHOUT
PREGNANCY

 Pregnancy can cause some uncomfortable side effects. These include nausea and
vomiting (especially early in the pregnancy)
 Skin changes (itchiness, pimples, stretch marks) - hormonal changes increase oil
gland secretion
 Breast changes - an increase in breast size is one of the first signs of pregnancy, and
the breasts may continue to grow throughout the pregnancy.

 Mood swings - Some girls may also experience depression during pregnancy or after delivery.
 Anemia- having lower than the normal number of healthy red blood cells.
 Urinary tract infection - is a bacterial infection in the urinary tract.
 Varicose veins in the legs and the area around the vaginal opening.
 Leg cramps
 Tiredness
 Sleep problems
 Backache
 Heartburn and constipation
IMPORTANCE OF MATERNAL NUTRITION

 Maternal health refers to the health of


women during pregnancy, childbirth and
the postnatal period.
 Nutrition plays a major role in maternal
and child health. The ability of mother to
provide nutrients and oxygen for her
baby is a critical factor for pregnancy
health and its survival.
