What is a letter ?
A character representing one or more of the sounds
used in speech; any of the symbols of an alphabet
What is a Sound?
A sound is the smallest unit of speech that can
only be heard by a person and is distinguished by
invisible aspects
In English the letter ‘c’ is mostly pronounced as a /k/
sound.
We can also pronounce ‘c’ as an /s/ sound.

city city /s/ sound

Here’s the rule:

When ‘c‘ comes directly before the letters ‘e‘, ‘i‘ or ‘y‘ we
use the /s/ sound.
in other cases we use a /k/ sound.

 Car It’s not followed directly by ‘e’, ‘i’ or ‘y’.

why?
 City It comes directly before ‘i’.
 cent It comes directly before ‘e’.
 dancing It comes directly before ‘i’.
What is the difference between
sounds and letters?
Letters are written, and sounds are spoken. It is
important that these functions are not confused.
When we write in normal spelling, we are using
letters to convey sounds.
