Lesson Goals
Learning Intention
Identify changes in society after the Black Death.

Success Criteria
I can explain these changes and the impact it
had on society.
Changes to Medicine
• Hospitals prior to the outbreak of the were places
that people were sent to be isolated. Upon
arrival, a person’s belongings were disposed of, as
it was assumed they would not survive.

• However, the outbreak had seen a new hope for

hospitals, with doctors using the facilities to treat
and cure patients rather than isolate them till
their deaths.
Changes to Sanitation
• Across Europe, there was more awareness of the
need to take responsibility for the health of the
population.

• London, however, had brought forward new

sanitation regulations to clean up the city. This
included laws that prevent littering, employment
of street sweepers and heavy fines for dumping
waste in the river.
Changes to Religion
• The Black Death weakened the influence of the
Catholic Church. People lost respect for the
church due to a variety of reasons.

• The new priests after the outbreak were often

less educated and more inexperienced than their
predecessors.
Changes to Power
• The huge decline in the numbers of peasants and
farmers meant that there were fewer people left
to perform these tasks.

• In Europe alone, the impact from the outbreak of

the Black Death had seen a change in Europe’s
economy, with lower classes gaining wealth and
paying back their debt.
Activity
• You are going to write a diary entry as a person who has lived through
the events of the Black Death.

• You are to write your diary entry 10 years on from the start of the Black
Death and highlight the changes that you have seen in society (i.e.
hospitalisation/medication, churches/religion, politics/government, etc.)

• You must include a personal touch to your story, did you lose family
members? Friends, etc…

• This will help you with your assessment task!

Finisher

• In your work books write

down THREE words that you
believe are important to the
Black Death.

• Examples: Plague, Europe,

Death, Change, etc….
