Great Famine
• 1315-1317, all across Europe
• Famine: extreme shortage of food
– Too much rain, too cool weather
• Many people died (10-25% of the
population)
• Led to an increase in crime
• Distrust in government (couldn’t handle
crisis)
Black Death
• AKA Great Plague, AKA Bubonic Plague
• 1346-1353, Central Asia through Europe
• Spread through the fleas on rats
• Symptoms: Buboes (large boils) on neck and
armpits, fever, vomiting blood, rashes
– Died within 2-7 days of initial infection
• About 50% of the European population died
• People distrusted the church– Blamed God
Renaissance (Rebirth in French)
• 1300s-1600s, Italy first, later Europe
• Emphasis on learning: humanities, literature,
art, science, music, religion)
• Cultural movement that rediscovered classical
literature and expanded on it
• Questioned religion and monarchies
Reformation
• Power shift within the Catholic Church
• Started in 1517, England
• Martin Luther, criticized Catholics and
started new branches, distrust within
churches
• Printing press: People could get, read,
and interpret bible on their own
• Turn away from the Pope
