NANOFIBERS
● Nanofibers are the fibers with diameter in nanometer in range.
● Nanofibers can be generated from different polymers and hence
have different physical properties and application potentials.
● Nanofibers are made of polymers.
● Polymers are connected via covalent bonds.
● The diameter of nanofiber depend on type of polymer used
and method of production.
● Some of the unique features of polymers are large surface
area-to-volume ratio, high porosity, material strength,
flexibility in functionalization compared to their microfiber
counterparts.

POLYMER MATERIALS
● There are two types of polymers used for
manufacturing nanofibres.
● Natural polymers such as collagen, cellulose,
silk fibroin and polysaccharides
● Synthetic polymers such as poly(lactic acid),
polycaprolactone, polyurethane,
poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid).

INFLUENCE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY ON TEXTILES

● The performance and behavior of textile fibers are paramount in fabric manufacturing and usage.
● Although, it is well established that fabrics made from cotton fibers offer properties, including
breathability, high absorbency, and softness for wearability and comfortability, extended usage of cotton
fabrics in specialized applications is limited because of the relatively poor strength, poor durability, and
ease of creasing, soiling, and flammability
● Recent nanotechnological insight into carbon nanomaterials has shown their superior influence on high-
performance composite materials.
● In order to expand knowledge of benefits accruable from architecture, behavior, in addition to sensory
dynamics of CNMs, three forms of CNM-based fibrous sensors, CNT-coated fibrous materials, reduced
graphene oxide (RGO)-coated fibrous material, and carbon fibers (CF), has been fabricated and utilized
as major sensory entities inculcated in fabrics for supervising the manufacturing procedure of fiber-filled
polymeric composites
● In a study, microarchitectural characterizations were derived using SEM and Raman images of carbon-
based NMs on textile fabrics.

INFLUENCE OF NANOPARTICLES ON TEXTILES

● Improved strength - Polymer composite fibers have undergone improvement in strength

and toughness along with reduced weight. They have attained optimization in
morphological, crystallinity, and mechanical behaviors of the nanoarchitecture.

● Ultraviolet inhibition - Varying approaches have been utilized in impacting UV resistance to

varying fabrics. Nontoxic, inorganic, and chemically stabilized UV inhibitors work at elevated
temperatures. Nanometric semiconducting oxides including ZnO and TiO2 effectively
undergo absorption and scattering of UV radiation.

● Antibacterial behavior - Fabrics impregnated with CuO NPs are highly safe and restrain skin
sensitization, irritation, and severe reactions to both normal and bleached skin.

COVID-19 textile personal protective equipment materials

● Surgical masks are non woven or knitted fabrics constructed using cotton, polyester, viscose,
polypropylene fibers.
● Surgical caps are constructed using cotton, polyester, polypropylene, and so on, fibers.
● Surgical sleeve cover, surgical shoe, and disposable bed sheet are constructed using cotton,
polyester, viscose, nylon, polyester, or blended fabrics.
● Cover surgical shoe protectors as depicted in Figure 12b are also fabricated using very heavy
*
nonwoven fabric, thicker in comparison with normal shoe cover, though very robust, soft,
comfortable, and environmentally safe.

Antiviral-oriented nanomaterials are usually in smaller dimension in comparison with

majority of viral particles. Hence, nanomaterials are capable of interacting in tune with the
viral particle ,resulting in viruses’ inactivation.

CONCLUSION
● The quests for enhanced appearance and multifunctionality in fashion, has instigated
nanotechnological evolution in textiles.
● In this era of COVID-19 pandemic, medical textiles are essential in the global war against this
virus.
● Woven, knitted and nonwoven textile materials are essential in fabricating personal
*
protective equipment (PPE) for COVID19.
● The evolution of these nanofibers increation of novel fabricating routes has resulted in
multifunctional textile materials at an industrial scale using particle embedment, spraying
deposition, fibrous drawing, and direct weaving.
● Technological advancement shave enhanced behaviors relative to drug releasing, moisture,
temperature, pressure sensing devices, and fiber optics enabled by textile-operated
batteries.
