Literature Review-1

Engineering Go, Change the World

This simulation of an automobile that is propelled by an electric motor, using energy

stored in a battery, known as Electric Vehicles(EVs) aims to obtain output values for the given
input parameters.
Battery electric vehicles store electricity onboard with high-capacity battery packs. Their
battery power is used to run the electric motor and all onboard electronics. Electric Vehicles
do not emit any harmful emissions and hazards. BEVs are charged by electricity from an
external source using electric Vehicle (EV) chargers.
While simulating, early design exploration can be accelerated to identify the most
promising concepts and a subset of critical performance criteria by applying statistical
methods for dimensionality reduction of the huge number of design variables considered
during a vehicle program.
This paper will discuss EV modelling with configurable structures which are suitable for
simulation at multiple fidelity levels. Simulation models associated with deployment and test
for different controllers will be combined to a single platform. Fast simulation is always a
necessary requirement for system test on complete drive schedules. This system has multiple
simulation steps and different solvers for different subsystems in order to speed up
simulation.

System Level Configurations:

The Vehicle Model consists of mainly:
• Vehicle Body
• Motor and Controller
• Battery Pack
• Power Converter
• Drive Cycle Source
INPUT DRIVE CYCLE PARAMETER:

Represents block which generates a drive cycle for a particular

time. It is basically time V/S speed data which resembles
similar to that of a real-time driving conditions with
acceleration and deceleration in an irregular pattern.
Practical Applications
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

• Simulation can be used to predict the performances of an existing or planned

system and to compare alternative solutions for a particular design problem.

• Virtual testing of control software with simulation.

• Modelling and analysis of supply networks.

• Assistance for personnel resource planning and personnel dispatching.

• Reducing the cost incurred during real-time testing.

• Simulations are faster than real-time testing. Hence, behaviour can be studied
faster for a long time interval.

SIMULATION RESULT:
Simulation is performed to valuate performance of the Designed Model through monitoring
Speed Comparison of reference and Feedback signal along with State-of-Charge of the
battery.
Wide open Throttle Condition:
• Speed Comparison:

The speed (m/s) from the

drive cycle and speed
feedback from the vehicle
body is plotted in order to
understand the response of
model according to the
drive cycle data.
Results(Expected) & Discussions
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

• Speed Comparison:

Due to inertial effects and

instantaneous velocity
variation, the actual velocity
curve (Blue curve) of model
varies from that of WOT
condition velocity curve
(Yellow curve).

• State-of-Charge of Battery – Acceleration:

The FTP75 drive cycle is

having several Acceleration
and deceleration profiles
that varies randomly which
depicts a real-life driving
scenario which helps to
track the nature of battery
discharge while different
acceleration profiles and
regenerative charging effects
on deceleration profiles. The
SoC scope block helps in
keeping track of the
remaining battery capacity.

• State-of-Charge of battery - Deceleration:

During deceleration after 30

seconds, a regenerative
voltage produced by motor
helps the regenerative
recharge of battery charging
the battery pack
Physics
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

• We need to define parameters like air drag, rolling resistance and

weight.

• Electrostatics

• Analyzing velocity, time and distance relationship comparing the

input and output parameters
RV College of
Engineering Electrical Go, Change the World

• DC permanent magnet motor is responsible to generate torque

applied on the motor’s shaft.
• H-bridge motor driver controls the power input to the motor
according to the load requirement or as per the defined driver cycle.
• A simple battery with internal resistance and constant voltage source
is used to supply the power required by the motor.
• The SoC scope helps in keeping track of the remaining battery
capacity and the output is obtained as a result.
Civil and Mechanical
RV College of
Engineering Go, Change the World

• A simple gear box is used to connect the motor to the rear axle of
the vehicle.
• Vehicle body include parameters like body mass, inertia,
aerodynamics drag, externally defined mass and center of gravity of
the body.
• Normal force acting and the slip relative to tire and surface of
contact is given as inputs to the tire model.
• Sensors will be used to find out the variation of speed of the vehicle
with time and also the total distance covered by the vehicle for a
cycle.
