Background of the
study
Background of the Study

Numeracy is about understanding numbers and

concepts in Mathematics. It is not only crucial in
everyday life, but also for academic achievement.
Numeracy does not solely involve around complex
formulas like algebra, but most importantly about basic
math skills that can help us in real-life problems.
Background of the Study

Unfortunately, numerous students reached high

school, particularly in grade 9, who do not know how to
do basic math, such as multiplication, subtraction and
division, especially on larger numbers.
Background of the Study

One of the areas where poor numeracy skills are

apparent is among grade 9 learners sections Empathy
and Equanimity in Pintuyan National High School, located
in P.D. Equipilag, Pintuyan, Southern Leyte, Philippines.
Due to lack of math skills, the test scores and grades of
the students decrease. Lack of comprehension on
mathematical concepts prompts them to copy their
classmates’ answer. This practice is widely used among
non-numerate students.
Background of the Study

According to Bustos, a professor at the University of

the Philippines, that poor performance starts early on in
early age. A World Bank reported that Philippines ranked
lowest among 58 countries on literacy, science and math.
According to this website www.philstar.com, the
Department of Education urged to focus on and improve
literacy and numeracy in early learners. That proves that
early education has an impact on current academic
performance, particularly in mathematics.
Background of the Study

During the pandemic, most students neglected their

learning modules and relied on math-solver apps or
websites such as Brainly and Gauthmath which lead to
the decrease of their interest towards learning.
Background of the Study

The correlation between male and female students

towards academic success differ, particularly in the
Philippines. Most Filipino male students do not seek
academic success, hence no motivation to learn. On the
other hand, most Filipino female students are
encouraged to achieve academic success.
Background of the Study

Thus, the significance of this study lies in its potential

to seek the causes, effects and possible solutions to
improve numeracy skills and mathematics performance
of grade 9 learners of Pintuyan National High School.
Statement of the
Problem
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to find the effects of poor numeracy

skills on the mathematics performance of grade 9
students of Pintuyan National High School
To answer the above cited problem, an answer to the
following will be sought:
Statement of the Problem

1. Are you a slow math learner?

1.1. If yes, what are the factors that affect your
numeracy skills? What are the effects of your numeracy
skills on your math performance?
1.2. If no, what are the solutions or strategies that
helped you to understand math better?
Statement of the Problem

2. What specific basic math skills do you struggle the

most?
3. Have you ever relied or used math-solver apps or
websites such as Brainly and Gauthmath? If yes, why do
you use it?
Statement of the Problem

4. In the scale of 1-5, rate how confident you are of your

math skills.
5. Do you think numeracy skills have affected your
mathematics performance?
Thank you.
