Rebellions for freedom

► In 1779 an indigenous rebellion


occurred against the abuse that the
mita had brought into their lives.
Tomás Katari was the leader in this
rebellion, for which he was
imprisioned and killed.
► After that, Tomás´ brothers: Dámaso
and Nicolás became the leaders of
other rebellions that occurred later.
► In 1780 and 1781 big rebellions
happened in the leadership of Tupac
Amaru II (Cuzco) and Julián Apaza
(Alto Perú).
► Tupac changed his name to Tupac
Katari, declaring himself viceroy, and
declaring war to the Spanish.
► He was imprisioned and killed by
Spanish soldiers.
First movements for freedom
► Chuquisaca: May 25th, 1809. The
first rebellion for freedom in
South America. The movement
got to La Paz, but it got
desintegrated.
► Because of that, in Buenos Aires
they changed of viceroy and
made a government that was up
of Criollos.
► Cochabamba: September 14th,
1810.
► Oruro: October 14th
► Santa Cruz: September 24th
The Declaration of Independence
► On August 6th 1824, Bolivar won against the Spanish
army lead by General José de Canterac in the Junín
battle.
► With this win, they went to fight in the Ayacucho
battle, and in December 9th 1824, the “independists”
won and the Independence of Peru and America was
recognized.
► José Miguel Lanza took over the city of La Paz,
declaring it´s Independence in January 29th 1825.
► Antonio José de Sucre, following the instructions of
Simón Bolivar, went to the Alto Perú territory in order
to legalize the process of Independence.
► Then, the territory of Bolivia had three choices: Either
become part of Argentina, or Perú or to become an
independent country.
► The Independence Act was declared in August 6th
1825.

►A decree established
that the new state was
to have the name of
Bolívar, “Father of the
Repúblic”.
► Therefore the name of
the new country was
Bolivia.

The Republic of Bolivia
● Bolivia was born according to the
territorial space that the Royal
Audience of Charcas occupied.
● After the declaration of the
Congreso General Constituyente
de Buenos Aires in May 9th 1825,
that said that the four provinces
that were a part of Alto Perú were
now free from Spain and left to
their own luck, and many
assemblies (Asambleas
Deliberantes) the 6th, 7th, 11th and
17th of August of 1825 Bolivia was
created as a new nation that had 5
provinces: Potosí, Charcas,
Cochabamba, La Paz and Santa
Cruz.
Territorial Problems
● In 1960, Bolivia started to have
territorial problems.
● We lost more than half of our
territory in different ways.
● With Brazil we lost the part of
Acre and Matto Grosso.
● With Paraguay the Chaco, through
the “Guerra del Chaco”.
● With Chile the Litoral.
The Day of the Sea
►We celebrate it every
March 23rd
remembering the loss
of our sea through the
Guerra del Pacífico.
