HISTORY
ORIGIN
20th Century
1940s – 1960s
In the 40s and 50s a new abstract art
movement, instigated by the Americans,
was formed: it was called abstract
expressionism.
1940s –
Even with Abstract Expressionism, several different terms are used
1960s depending on the artist.
1940s – 1960s
From the 1960s onwards, two main
new trends emerged: Optical Art (or
Op-art) and
Minimalism. The Hungarian Victor Vasarely is the father of Op-art,
an art which is interested in optical effects.
1940s – During this same period minimal art emerged, carried by artists such
1960s as Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris and Dan Flavin. Their motto was
economizing resources. Art is reduced to a simple structure which is
often geometric but always abstract.

LATE 19th CENTURY
Up until the beginning of abstract art, the main
aim of art and paintings was to portray images
and objects, but abstract art created a new
19
purpose for art, and that was to evoke
emotions and feelings. th
During the last couple of decades of the 19th
century, art had started moving from
representational to abstract and the whole
purpose of art took on new meanings
20th CENTURY
In the early 20th century, abstract art started gaining importance as
artists could now delve deeper into themselves and create art
that was not just depicting things and objects as everyone saw them.

WASSILY KANDINSKY
The beginnings of abstract art are hard to pinpoint. But if a date for the beginning of
abstract art had to be given, 1910 can be agreed upon (almost) unanimously.
This date coincides with the first abstract watercolor by Wassily Kandinsky. The
Russian painter – linked to the avant-garde movement in Eastern Europe – was the first painter
who used no formal composition. This is how abstract art came to be defined: as art which
does not represent reality. This art concentrates on colors and shapes that are free from the
usual subjects or objects from the outside world.

This type is exemplified in works by Turner and

to detach the work of art from reality, as the
object dissolves in a swirl of pigment.

Geometric Abstraction is also known as
Concrete Art and Non-Objective Art. As you
might expect, it is characterized by non-
naturalistic imagery, typically geometrical
shapes such as circles, squares, triangles,
rectangles, and so forth.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-
1944)
This artist was the first important abstract art artist.
He is regarded as the founder of non-
01
representational art. In 1895 Kandinsky saw some
paintings of Monet and others, and would later
describe how he thought that artists should not do
paintings in a manner that was difficult to
understand.
