1.4.3.4- DISCIPLINE
• NORMS > BEHAVIOUR IN THE CLASS
STUDENTS’ ACTIVE AGREEMENT  Adhere to them
-Norms need to be explicitly discussed
>If students understand what is expected of them and why it is expected,
they are far more likely to conform to these behavioural norms.
-Norms can be jointly negotiated.
>We should take the students’ opinions into account.
-Norms need to be reviewed and revisited.
Schools just like any other group-based entities, need norms of behaviour if
they are to function efficiently.
We could have in mind three important points in order to get the students’ active agreement with norms,
because if we do so, they are more likely to adhere to them rather tan feel they have been coerced into
obedience.
• Norms need to be explicitly discussed: That means that we need to explain everything about those norms
(meaning and why they are there), we also might describe the kind of behaviour we expect from them
(we can use a poster or wall chart where they can see those rules whenever necessary)
If students understand what is expected of them and why it is expected, they are far more likely to
conform to these behavioural norms.

• Norms can be jointly negotiated: We will actively negotiated what should go into our list, we are going to
do a kind of contract between teacher and students (we include details about behaviour rules, how often
homework is expected and stuff like that) we should take the students’ opinions into account.

• Norms need to be reviewed and revisited: When the group starts behaving in ways that are not especially
appropriate, we will discuss the situation with the group reminding them the contract, or we can come up
with new norms.
