ENGINEERING 1
(GE 413)
DENAFEL C. SARAÑA,CE
Topic 1:

Geotechnical Engineering
-also known as Soil Mechanics
 A study about soil and its uses to the engineering industry

 In engineering, soil is where structures were built.

 A study in Civil Engineering that involves the
properties and characteristics of soil, its behavior and
forces affecting it and its utilization as a material.
Soil Engineering
 A stream of Geotechnical Engineering which exclusively
deals with the understanding characteristics and
mechanics of soil
 It helps analyze the structure composition of the soil
of the purpose of construction site..
Thus, this helps in decision making whether the soil of the
proposed construction site or building is worth exploiting.
Also, it deals with providing optimized design concepts and
construction techniques according to the composition and
physical properties of soil.
Soil
 It is composed of loosely bound material particles with
different sizes and shape due to many weather factors.

 soil covers 25% of the earth’s surface.

Soil is the crust of the earth that includes the entire thicknes, all of
its layers from the top of the ground until the bed rock.

Soil is practically utilized as the foundation support or

construction material
Why do we need to study Soil?
 All of the structures were either constructed or supported by
soil or both.

Why it is important to study Soil?

Reasons to study the Properties of Soil
 It is a foundation that supports the structures and
embankments
 It is a construction material.
 For Slopes and Landslides.
 Earth’s retaining Structures.
 Special problems.
To Do!!
Quiz #01:(write your answers in a piece of paper such as a quiz
note book or bond paper that will be compiled after the end of the
term.) submit a picture of your answer in our Google Classroom not
later than Friday of this week.

Identify at least 5 problems in Civil Engineering

Industry that involves soil.
With these problems you have identified, explain why
do you think soil was the reason it became a problem?
