Checking the Range of Motion and Positioning A Patient


Some Vocabularies about positioning of a patient :
Raise : menaikkan, mengangkat, meninggikan.
Lower : menurunkan
Adjust : menyetel, menyesuaikan.
Flex : menekuk, membengkokkan.
Bend : membengkokkan
Squat : berjongkok
Fist : kepalan tangan
Straighten : meluruskan
Clench : menjepit
Slide : meluncurkan
Gently : dgn lembut
Turn…round : memutar
Tip of index finger : ujung jari
Slip off / on : melepas / memakai
Stretch : merentangkan , meregangkan.
Alignment : penempatan pada posisi yang benar.
Accomplish : memenuhi
Sideways : miring
Lean : bersandar, condong / miring
Up-right : tegak lurus
Downwards : menghadap ke bawah
Forward : ke arah depan
Decubitus : keadaan kulit yang luka karena tekanan / posisi yang tidak berubah
Tummy : bagian / daerah perut (khususnya berbicara kepada anak)

There are three kinds of Sentences :


I. Positive Sentences / Kalimat Positif
Subject + Verb / to be + Object + Manner of time / place

II. Negative Sentences / Kalimat Negatif


Subject + Verb / to be + not + Object + Manner of time / place

III. Interrogative Sentences / Kalimat Tanya


Do / Does / Did + Subject + Verb + Object + Manner of time / place
ACTIVITY :
Complete the blanks. Study this conversation :

Nurse : Would you slip off your top things, please. Now I just want to see you standing.
Hands by your side. You’re sticking that hip out a little bit, aren’t you ?
Patient : Yes, well. I can’t straighten up early .
Nurse : (1) …You can walk as far as you can with your knees straight and stop when you
had enough.
Patient : Oh. That’s the limit.

Nurse : Not very far is it. Stand up again. Now I would like you (2)…stand…. That’s not much

down the right side of your thigh. See how far you can go. That’s fine. Now (4)…to move
opposite side. Fine. Now, just come back to standing straight. Now, keep your feet

Look to the right. Keep your knees and feet steady.
Patient : Oh, that’s sore.
Nurse : Go back to the center again. Now, try the same thing and go round to the left side.
Fine, Now back to the center. That’s fine. Now, could you to lie face down on the
couch ? I’m just going to try and find out where the sore spot is.
FORTH CHAPTER : NURSING SKILL (B)
POSITIONING OF A PATIENT

Basic Instructions :
Lie flat your back Roll over into side lying
Up right bed position Roll over sideways
Now, lie flat in………(supine position) Roll over on your tummy
I need …………….(this pillow, towel) under your………… to put, to place

Semi-- Fowler’s Position : with head of bed 30 ‘—60’


Now, I want / need to elevate / lower the head of your bed.

Fowler’s Position : with head of bed 60’—90’.


Now, I want / need to elevate / lower the head of your bed.
to make you more comfortable.

Side lying / Sideways : Now, I want you to…….into side lying


I need to help you………………change your position
roll yourself
• SIM’S Position : Patient in complete side—lying
position, but move further to the far side of
the bed. Partially roll patient forward partly on
abdomen.

• Prone Position :
I need to help you to change your position with face downwards.
Let me help you………………………………….
I want you to change your position to lie on your tummy.

I will put / place this pillow under your stomach.


Just extend your right elbow.
Place your left hand under your help. That’s fine.
Nursing Note for the position of the patients
Correct positioning of patients is essential for maintaining proper alignment. Many
patients because of injury, disease, helplessness or therapeutic devices need assistance
with repositioning. Change the position of the patient at least every 2 hour. Obtain
help to prevent injury to yourself and the patient.

There are three basics position for the patients : supine, side-lying, prone.

But there are variations of each position and many other positions (such as dorsal
recumbent position, knee chest) depending on what kind of intervention, procedures,
examination or therapeutic treatment the nurse will do for the patient.

Basically, changing position accomplishes four things :


l. It provides comfort
2. It relieves pressure on bony prominences and other parts.
3. It helps prevent contractures, deformities and respiratory problems
4. Improves circulation.
It is essential to know how to correctly support and position the patient while
maintaining good body mechanics for both of you.
Definition of Position :
There are Some Definitions of Positioning :

l. Positioning is defined as planning the person in a proper body


alignment for the purposes of preventive, promotive, curative
and rehabilitative aspects of health or placing the patient in
good body alignment as needed therapeutically.
2. Moving a patient into a specific position / posture to facilitate
examination, surgery as for do not confuse with therapeutic
purposes.
3. A place where someone or something is located or has been put.
--the distress call had given the ship’s position.
4. A particular way in which someone or something is placed or
arranged. –he moved himself into a reclining position.
5. Put or arrange (someone or something) in a particular place or
way). – he pulled out of chair and positioned it between them.
COMFORTABLE POSITION
DEFINITION OF COMFORTABLE :
l. Providing physical ease and relaxation.
Invitingly comfortable beds. ---snug, warm, pleasant, enjoyable, agreeable,
congenial, safe, restful, home like.
2. As large as is needed or wanted. A comfortable location and position.
secure, sheltered , safe, restful.
Proper position is also vital for providing comfort for patients who are bedridden
or have decreased mobility related to medical condition or treatment. When posi-
tioning a patient in bed, supportive devices such as pillows, rolls, and blankets
along with repositioning, can aid in providing comfort and safety.
On the main goals of proper patient positioning is to keep the patients naturally
aligned as possible while providing the surgical staff access to the site, and quick ,
jerky movement should be avoided. 3 Fowler’s position, as sitting position, is
typically used for neurosurgery and should surgeries.
