dry, scaly skins
in some areas or
all over their
bodies.

covered with
calcium-based
material.
Reptiles have an
egg tooth, which
is a small, sharp
tooth used to
break or tear off
the egg’s
covering during

Reptiles such as
boa constrictors,
rattlesnakes,
vipers and most
sea snakes are

hatched within
the body of the
parent, as in
some snakes.

and alligators
have raised
nostrils that
are connected
to their lungs.
They have a
well-developed
spongy lung that
provides a large
surface area for
gas exchange.
Turtles and tortoise are the
oldest groups of reptiles.
They can live hundreds of
years.
Tortoises live
mostly on land
and are
vegetarians. They
don’t have
flippers (webbed
feet).
They also have
strong, sharp beaks.
Their bodies are
covered with hard,
protective shells to
hide themselves
when they sense
danger.
Turtles mostly live
in water.
Freshwater turtles
live in ponds and
lakes but climb on
the logs to get
some sun.
Sea turtles have
the ability to store
oxygen for
several hours.
They rise up to the
