related to reading and interpreting different types of literature.

In the K to 12 English Curriculum, the Literature


competencies or the ‘set of literary competence or
skills that learners must acquire are integrated into
the Grade Level Standard.

As stated in the K-12 Basic Education
Curriculum Framework, the ultimate goal
of language teaching is to develop the
communicative competence of the
learners.

Communicative Competence
Communicative Competence is a synthesis of knowledge of
basic grammatical principles
1. knowledge of how language is used in social settings to
perform communicative functions, and
2. How knowledge of utterances and communicative functions
can be combined according to the principles of discourse.
Communicative Competence
 If a person can make himself or herself clear
and understandable;
 Can utilize and use the language appropriately
and correctly, then he or she has attained
communicative competence.
Communicative Competence
is classified into four
competencies:
1. Grammatical or Linguistic Competence
The term itself “Grammatical”, this competence is the ability
to use the grammar
It means the acquisition of phonological rules,
morphological words, syntactic rules, semantic rules and
lexical items.
2. Sociolinguistic Competence

Refers to the learning of pragmatic aspect of various speech acts,


namely, the cultural values, norms, and other socio-cultural
conventions in social contexts.
They are the context and topic of discourse, the participant’s
social status, sex, age, and other factors which influence styles
and registers of speech.
3.Discourse Competence
Discourse competence deals with organizing words,
phrases and sentences in order to create conversations,
speeches, poetry, email messages, newspaper articles etc.
Discourse competence can be defined as the ability to use
(produce and recognize) coherent and cohesive texts in an
oral or written form (Bachman 1990b, p. 29)

The Two Main Aspects of
Discourse
1. Cohesion
Refers to using linking expressions, such as conjunctions or
adverbial phrases, to connect ideas. Enhancing cohesion in
writing means making the flow from one sentence to another
move more smoothly.
Example:
She cooked adobo and I tasted it.

I tasted it and she cooked adobo.


2. Coherence
Refers to the relationships between ideas or event.
A coherent text is one that makes sense.
 This concept includes clearly and logically
indicating relationships, such as cause-effect and
problem-solution, between ideas or events.
4.Strategic Competence

The ability to recognize and repair


communication breakdowns before, during, or
after they occur.
It can be verbal or nonverbal strategies.
