FRAGMENTS
A group of words that express a complete

Example: The students are bored.

(this tells us WHO is doing the action.)

(this is what the students are doing)

COMMON TYPES OF FRAGMENT

1. Dependent Clause Fragment


This happens when using a dependent word in
the beginning of a sentence

Example: After Diane saw the accident.


To fix this, either remove the dependent word (after)
New sentence: Diane saw the accident.

Or by completed the thought.


New sentence: After Diane saw the accident she fainted.

2. Forgetting the Subject


These fragments have a verb, but they are
missing the subject.

Example: Finished all her homework.


To fix this, we just need to add a subject.
New sentence: Diane finished all her homework.

3. –ING Fragments
When we use a word ending in –ing at the beginning of
a sentence it sometimes become a fragment

Example: Hoping to finish on time.


To fix this, we just need to add a subject and linking verb
New sentence: Diane was hoping to finish on time.

4. To Fragments
This is when a word group begins with the word “to”

Example: To the park.


To fix this, we need to add a subject and a verb
New sentence: Diane took her dog to the park.

5. Example Fragments
This is when using the words like: including, such as,
and for example in the beginning of a word group

Example: Such as carbonara


To fix this, we need to add a subject and complete the thought,
New sentence: Diane likes to cook her favorite foods, such
as carbonara, when she is at home.
