Welcome to Earth Science!

Chapter 1: The Nature of

Science

BIG Idea: Earth Scientists

use specific methods to
investigate Earth and beyond.
I. What is Earth Science?
 the study of the Earth and the universe around it…

 the study of Earth systems and systems in space;

including weather and climate systems, and the
study of nonliving things such as rocks, oceans,
and planets.
A. The Scope of Earth Science:
1. Astronomy: the study of objects beyond
Earth’s atmosphere.

 The oldest branch of

Earth Science.
2. Meteorology: the study of
Earth’s atmosphere.
 Weather
Forecasters

 Tornado Chasers
3. Geology: the study of the
origin, history, and structure of
Earth.
4. Oceanography: the study of the life and
properties of Earth’s oceans.

 JACQUES COUSTEAU
How much
of our Earth
is covered
by OCEAN
water?
5. Environmental Science: the
study of the interactions of
organisms and their
surroundings.
B. Earth’s Systems
1. Geosphere: the area from the
surface of Earth down to its
center.
 Three main parts:
a) Crust
b) Mantle
c) Core
 Inner core
 Outer core
2. Atmosphere: the blanket of gases
that surrounds our planet.
3. Hydrosphere: all the water on
Earth.
4. biosphere: part of the earth
where life exist.
Matter and energy
flows and cycle
between the four
subsystems to
sustain and make
life on Earth
possible.
The processes that
move matter and
energy from one
sphere to another
is called as sphere
interactions.
Can you think of
an example how
earth spheres
interact to one
another?
The four subsystems are closely
linked through the
biogeochemical cycles
which involves biological,
geochemical, and chemical factors.

•The ways in which

an element—or
compound such as
water—moves
between its various
living and nonliving
forms and locations
in the biosphere
ACTIVITY 1: Using the flow chart , identify the subsystems interacting in the carbon and oxygen cycle shown in
the picture below. Write your answers in a separate sheet of paper.
Write T if the statement is true and F if the statement is
false. If false, identify the word/words that make the
statement incorrect.

1. Earth is a multi-part system of interrelating physical,

chemical, andbiological processes.
2. Atmosphere serves as the solid part of the Earth.
3. Biosphere is considered as the life zone of the Earth.
4. Earth is a dynamic entity with various separate but
highly interrelating subsystems.
5. Hydrosphere includes all water on the Earth’s surface
only.
6. Earth can sustain and flourish life form due to its
components.
7. Matter and energy flows and cycle between the two
subsystems tosustain and make life on Earth possible.
8. Changes in any sphere greatly affects the other
spheres.
9. Any disturbance and interference in the flow of the
matter and energydoes not affect any of the
subsystems.
10. Both the biotic and abiotic components of the earth
interact with each other in the biosphere.
Each group must create a concept map that will explain on
how the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere are
interconnected.

Each group will be given 10 minutes to work on their concept map

using manila paper and pentel pen and chose are presentative to
present the work of the group in the class.
Unit Performance Task
 Research on the reasons why Earth is considered as
unique/habitable planet. Choose at least 2 reasons.
 Write and present your answer on the board.

Scores-10 points 2 excellent reasons

8 points 2 good reasons
6 points only 1 good reason
Prepare for unit summative quiz
