Standard Deviation of the Sampling Distribution of the
Sample Mean -If the population is normally distributed
and the population standard deviation is unknown, the
standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the
sample mean is estimated by
Example 1: A set of data is normally distributed with a
population mean of µ=35. What is the mean and standard
deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample mean
using a sample of size n= 49 with a sample standard deviation
of s=4 ?

List the given information.

The mean µ=35

Sample standard deviation is s= 4
The sample size is n= 49
Example 1 solution:
The population is normally distributed, so the mean of the sampling distribution
of the sample mean is equal to the population mean.

Estimate the standard deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample mean
using the sample standard deviation
Example 2: Determine the variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean if n =27 and s= 11 .

List the given information:

Sample standard deviation is s= 11. It follows that the sample

variance is = 121
The sample size n= 27
Example 2 solution:
Estimate the variance of the sampling distribution of the
sample mean using the sample variance

Therefore, the variance of the sampling distribution of

sample mean is ≈ 4.48

Problem 1: A set of data is normally distributed with a

population mean of 98. Determine the mean and standard
deviation of the sampling distribution of the sample mean
using a sample of size n=36 with a sample standard
deviation of s= 1.9 .
INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY:

Problem: What are the variance and standard deviation of

the sampling distribution of the sample mean if n=45 and
s=13
