Freedom
Existentialism
Jean-Paul Sarte
was a French philosopher,
playwright, novelist, political
activist, biographer, and literary
critic. He was one of the key
figures in the philosophy
of existentialism.
Existentialism
6
“Existence precedes essence.”
7
We are condemned to be free.
8
Hell is other people.
9
Sartre’s absolute freedom
can be best explained from
his atheistic view.
10
Sartre’s absolute freedom
consists of these two realities
– that we can do anything
(good or evil), and at the
same time, we choose to live
our own way of life.
11
Absolute freedom=
Spontaneous choices

Origin of Freedom
Imago Dei
Imago Dei
(the image of God)
- refers to the unique imprint God placed
upon humanity, identifying people as a
special creation.
Humans are rational, moral and responsible.
14
“So God created mankind in his own
image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.”
15
Freedom originates from God as
a gift to mankind.
16
Essentialism
17
“Essence precedes existence.”
18
1. The very essence of man’s
freedom is to do what is good
and avoid what is evil.
19
2. Free will is given to us to
incline ourselves to the
Supreme Being
20
IMAGO DEI does not
guarantee us a perfection of
life.
21
All actions
have
consequences!
22
Why couldn’t God create a SINLESS
world?
23
Imago Dei
Our freedom comes from the
Supreme and Highest Being.

Situated Freedom
Freedom is relatively true
only with a given situation.
27
Freedom is interwoven with
the field of existences.

You see a runaway trolley moving toward
five tied-up (or otherwise incapacitated)
people lying on the tracks. You are
standing next to a lever that controls a
switch. If you pull the lever, the trolley will
be redirected onto a side track, and the
five people on the main track will be
saved. However, there is a single person
lying on the side track.
You have two options:
