5 Major Categories of Control Measures
CATEGORIES MEANING
1. Elimination removing hazard completely
replacing one hazardous agent or work
2. Substitution
process with a less dangerous one
changing a piece of machinery (ex.
3. Engineering controls Using proper machine guards) or a work
process to reduce exposure to hazard.
working a limited number of hours in a
4. Administrative control
hazardous area. (ex. job rotation)
Includes ear and eye protection,
5. Personal Protective Equipment
respirators and protective clothing.
REMEMBER:
• It is always better to control hazard as close as the source as
possible. Using personal protective equipment is the least
effective and least acceptable of all control measures.
METHODS OF
CONTROL
1. ELIMINATION
• It is the process of removing hazard from the workplace.
• It is the most effective method of controlling risk because the hazard
is no longer present.
• It is the preferred way to control a hazard and should be used
whenever possible.
• Preventing it from entering the workplace.
Eliminate Hazards at the “Development Stage”
It is important to consider the worker’s health and safety when work
processes are still in the planning stage.
When purchasing machines, safety first not cost.
Machine should conform to national safety standard.
Machines that are not produced with the proper guards on them may
cost less to purchase, but more in terms of accidents, loss of
production, compensation, etc.
