GOALS, TIME

AND STRESS
MANAGEMENT
SOFT SKILLS CHAPTER 2
WEEK 3
OBJECTIVES:
• 1. EXPLORE YOUR VALUES AND PERSONAL MISSION.
• 2. SET ACADEMIC AND LIFE GOALS USING S.M.A.R.T SYSTEM.
• 3. UNDERSTAND WHO YOU ARE AS A TIME MANAGER.
• 4. BUILD A SCHEDULE AND PRIORITIZE GOALS AND TASKS.
• 5. CONFRONT PROCRASTINATION.
• 6. CONTROL STRESS THROUGH TIME AND TASK MANAGEMENT
• If the following are examples of values, what is the meaning of VALUES?
VALUES
1. If you were offered a job that you knew you’d hate
every single day, but the pay was four times what you
are currently making, would you take the job?
Questions
about how 2. If you’re the type of individual who is compassionate
and filled with mercy for other people who have less
your values than you do, would you walk on by when you see
someone stealing money from a homeless person on

shape your the street?

3. If you were raised in a home growing up where
life everything was painstakingly neat, tidy, spotless, and
carefully organized, you are likely comfortable in clean
space. Would you cheerfully live with someone who is
messy and dirty?
VALUES
The beliefs people have, especially about
what is right and wrong and what is most
important in life, that control their
behaviour.

Example:
Nadine is an honest person, so she will never
lie to others. Since she values honesty, she
hates people who cheat and lie to others.

Reflect for a few mins and tell us your

values!
WHAT’S THE IMPORTANCE OF
VALUES?
• Because what you value often determines the choices
you make, your values also shape your life
experiences.
• For example: you value kindness. You jump at the
chance to help other people, and you’re generous in
giving your time and resources to worthy causes or
to friends and family.
DISCUSSION (IN PAIRS)
1. Everyone has a personal set of values, built from
their unique life experiences. How are you going
to react to someone who has completely different
values than yours when it comes to the same
problems?
2. We can learn a lot of our own values by the way we
react to other people. Think of behaviors that you
disapprove of, or dislike, from others. What does
this tell you about your own values? How would you
behave differently if you were in their position?
3. Why is it important for us to have values?
The importance of values
• 1. VALUES – (WHAT YOU BELIEVE)
• 2. BEHAVIOR – (WHAT YOU BELIEVE CONTROLS YOUR
BEHAVIOR)
• 3. GOALS – (BEHAVIOR CONTROLS YOUR GOALS AND
HOW YOU ACHIEVE THEM)
The importance
of CORE values
• We all can have different
values in life, but each of
us MUST possess these
core values to be a well-
rounded human being.

5. SCHEDULE SLEEP
TIME TRAPS
HOW TO HANDLE TIME TRAPS:
PROCRASTINATION / ‫سويف مماطلة‬GGG‫ت‬
/

• Are you a procrastinator?

• If so, write about the last time you
procrastinated on a school
assignment, a chore or another
task. Why did you procrastinate?
Did you complete the task? If it
had a deadline, did you complete
it on time? How did you feel?
PROCRASTINATION
• There is a biological reason as to why we procrastinate:
the prefrontal cortex and limbic system of our brain.
The former is responsible for planning and decision
making, while the latter contains the brain’s pleasure
center.
• The limbic system is more developed than the
prefrontal cortex, so it often wins when we are faced
with an unpleasant task, making humans naturally
inclined to procrastinate.

following questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQMwmBNNOnQ

Stop the video at 0:36 and answer: How many college students were
found to procrastinate in one study? How many of you procrastinate
on assignments?
Stop at 2:05: Review the differences between task-driven and
deadline-driven people.
Stop at 2:58: What is the biological reason that people procrastinate?
Stop at 3:12: How can procrastination be a good thing?
Watch the following video and answer the
following questions:
Stop at 3:56: What are chronic procrastinators? What
are some problems with chronic procrastination?
Stop at 4:24: Why are people chronic procrastinators?
Is it always bad?
Another way to
manage your time
• Take charge of the technology.

Tell us how do you typically manage your use of

technology!
Research suggest that:
Spending too much time using the
smartphone facilitates sedentary
behaviours, reduces the time of physical
activity, which increases the risk of
premature death, diabetes, heart disease
and different types of cancer.

3. What is the relationship between students’ weight and duration of using mobile
phones?
4. What are some of the risks of using mobile phones too much?
Now that you found the danger of mobile
phones, what’re you going to do about it?
• Go back to the article and answer the following:
What would be the best way to deal with
using too much of mobile phones?

• 1. When was the term “multitasking” first introduced and for
what?

store big amount of it to conscious awareness. Is it true or
false? Why?
