BACKGROUND
• Contribute significant information on the
environmental problem, climate change and
pollution problem.
• To introduce an innovation that can be helpful to
people by using waste material (barsanga)

OBEJECTIVES
• aim at developing biodegradable plastic
• producing a good, environment-friendly, inexpensive and
toxic-free bioplastic using the rhizome of barsanga (C.
rotundus).
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
METHODOLOGY
DIFFERENT SET UP
Treatment Concentration
T1 100% Barsanga Rhizome

T2 75% Barsanga Rhizome

25% Commercial Starch

T3 50% Barsanga rhizome

50% Commercial Starch

T0 100% Commercial Starch

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Effectiveness of Pulverized Barsanga (Cyperus rotundus)
Rhizome as Bioplastic Production

• The overall mean of the three experimental set-up is 3.70 which is

interpreted as “Very Effective”.
• Elasticity has the highest mean rating of 4.08 followed by texture
having a mean of 3.65 and they are both described as “Very
Effective”.
• Biodegradability has a mean rating of 3.37 wherein the descriptive
rating is “ Effective”
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
• In terms of texture, the highest mean rating was
obtained using the T1 which is the 100% barsanga
rhizome.
• On elasticity, the highest mean rating was 4.21
obtained using the T3
• T2 got the highest mean rating of 3.46 in terms of
the biodegradability of the biodegradable plastic
product that was burried within 2 weeks. The result
was described as “ Effective”.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Effectiveness of Commercial Starch, the Control Group in
Bioplastic Production

As a whole, the mean rating of the commercial

starch as bioplastic is 3. 80 interpreted as “Very
Effective”
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Summary Between Barsanga Rhizome in Bioplastic
Production and Commercial Starch in Producing Bioplastic

The overall mean rating of the barsanga rhizome as bioplastic is

3.70 which is described as “Very Effective”.
On the other hand, the mean rating of the commercial starch as
bioplastic is 3.80 which is also described as “Very Effective”.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
t-test for Significant Difference between 100% Barsanga (Cyperus
rotundus) and Commercial Starch

It is obvious that the significance (t-value) is 0.000000048 which is less

than 0.05, the level of significance used. This means that the null
hypothesis which states that there is no significant difference between the
experimental group using 100% barsanga rhizomes to the to the control
group in production of bioplastic in terms of texture, elasticity and
biodegradability is not rejected.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
t-test for Significant Difference between 75% Barsanga (Cyperus
rotundus) and 25% Commercial Starch in terms of Effectiveness

The significance (t-value) is 0.000000035

which is less than 0.05. This means that the
null hypothesis is not rejected.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
t-test for Significant Difference between 50% Barsanga (Cyperus
rotundus) and 50% Commercial Starch in terms of Effectiveness

The mean difference between the experimental set up and the

control set up is 0.09 in terms of its effectiveness in producing
biodegradable plastic. The significance (t value) is 0.
000000047 considered less than 0.05 which means that the
null hypothesis is not rejected.
CONCLUSION
Based from the results of the study it is therefore concluded:

1.The pulverized barsanga rhizome is feasible

in bioplastic production in terms of its
texture, elasticity and biodegradability.
CONCLUSION

2. That the treatment using 100%

pulverized barsanga rhizome was very
effective in producing biodegradable
plastic.
CONCLUSION

3. There is no significant difference between

the barsanga rhizome and the commercial
starch in producing biodegradable plastic
RECOMMENDATION
The use of barsanga (Cyperus rotundus)
rhizome in producing biodegradable plastic
is recommended. This product is a good
substitute of the non-biodegradable plastic
as well as the biodegradable plastic since
the raw material used came from a waste
material.
RECOMMENDATION

Farmers should not ignore the

potential use of barsanga. It may be a
threat to the crops but there are a lot of
possible things that a barsanga can
offer.
RECOMMENDATION

Conduct further studies on the

other parts of barsanga and its
feasibility in producing
biodegradable plastic.
RECOMMENDATION

Conduct further studies regarding the

production of biodegradable materials
with the use of different machines or
gadget in order to measure the
effectiveness and the potential of the
product.
RECOMMENDATION

An in-depth investigation and study of

other plants containing starch to
determine their feasibility in producing
bioplastic
