Instructional Planning:
- Preparation for teaching and learning,
including; construction of goals, objectives,
and instructional and assessment
methodology.
“How to teach and what to teach”
- Systematic planning, developing,
evaluating and managing the instructional
process based on principles of learning and
instruction.

Committed to
Systematic Instruction:
A carefully planned sequence for
instruction, similar to a builder's blueprint for a
house characterizes systematic instruction. A
blueprint is carefully thought out and designed
before building materials are gathered and
construction begins.

Committed to
The Systematic of Instructional
Planning
- It incorporates the principles of applied
behavior analysis and allows for educators
to teach a wide range of skills, including
everything from academic to functional
living skills.

Why is Systematic Instruction
important?
Systematic instruction involves breaking a skill
down into individual components so that students
can learn it more easily. This approach helps
students understand what they need to do to
complete a task or achieve a goal.

spc | COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Committed to
Systematic instruction is a great way to show
that any student can learn. Educators are also
responsible for breaking skills down to help
students learn, no matter their challenges.
Discovering and utilizing the power of systematic
instruction can ensure that educators everywhere
are helping students at every grade and level.

spc | COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Committed to
What is the purpose of systematic
instruction?
The goal of systematic instruction is one of
maximizing the likelihood that whenever children
are asked to learn something new, they already
possess the appropriate prior knowledge and
understandings to see its value and to learn it
efficiently.

Instructional design system process
The ASSURE Model
• Analyze learners
• State objectives
• Select instructional methods, media, and
material
• Utilize media and materials
• Require learner Participation
• Evaluate and revise
spc | COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Committed to
Analyze learners
• General Characteristics- grade, age, ethnic
group, sex, mental, emotional, physical, or
social problems, socioeconomic level, and so
on,
• Specify entry competences- prior
knowledge, skills, and attitude
• Learning styles- verbal, logical, visual,
musical, structured, and so on,

State Objectives
The ABCD of writing objectives are:
• Audience (Who are your learners?)
• Behavior to be demonstrated
• Conditions under which the behavior will be
observed
• Degree to which the learned skill are to be
mastered.

Committed to
Select instructional methods, media, and
material
Select the:
Instructional method that you feel is most
appropriate to meet the objectives for these
particular learners.
Media, materials, resources and technologies
that would be best suited to work with your
instructional method, the objectives, and your
students.
spc | COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Committed to
Utilize media and materials
• Offer the learning activity and use the
media and technology that you have selected
or designed and developed.
• You should always try the finished products
before using them in a real learning session.
• Make sure that your instructional media and
technology are suitable and working in the
given context/ environment.

Require learner Participation
• N.B people learn best when they are actively
involved in the learning.
• The passive learner has more trouble learning
whatever learning opportunity they are
presented with
• Whatever your teaching strategy, you can
incorporate questions and answers,
discussion, group works, hands- on activities,

and other way of getting people actively
involved to meet the learning outcomes.

• Educator should create opportunities for

everyone to participate in the learning
activities.

spc | COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Committed to
Evaluate and revise
• The media/ technologies used might not have
been appropriate for the type of learner or the
content might not have been very
interesting/motivating.
• The instructional strategy might not have got
the students in participation or the strategy
might have been difficult to implement.

spc | COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Committed to
• The assessment you used might have shown
that students didn’t learn what you tested for
• Poor learning will continue to result if the
educator doesn’t reflect upon the instruction
given and work on revising it until students
become successful learners.

If the instructional objective was not obtained,
then you must determine what you need to
change, any additional materials required and if
there is an inconsistency in the implementation
of the instructional strategy. Occasionally, you
might discover the instructional method you’re
using needs to be broken down into a simple
steps or that you need to teach a prerequisite skill
prior to teaching a learning objective.
