PAPER 1
There is a total of 5 five questions of which candidates must answer Question 1, Question 2 and two others.
1. Major themes of the Qur’an: Three passages will be set from the 3 themes of Quran of which candidates
may choose any two. [8 marks, compulsory question]
2. The history and importance of the Qur’an: This question is usually set in more than one part, and requires
an essay length answer. [14 marks, compulsory question]
3. The life and importance of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): One or two questions are set, usually in more
than one part, requiring essay length answers. [14 marks]
4. 4. The first Islamic community: One or two questions are set, usually in more than one part, requiring
essay length answers. [14 marks]

Total marks = 50
Time 1.5 hours
PAPER 2
There is a total of 5 five questions of which candidates must answer Question 1, Question 2 and two others.
1. Major teachings in the Hadiths of the Prophet: Four passages are set from the syllabus of which
candidates may choose any two. [8 marks, compulsory question]
2. 2. The history and importance of the Hadiths: This question is usually set in more than one part, and
requires an essay length answer. [14 marks , compulsory question]
3. 3. The period of rule of the Rightly Guided Caliphs and their importance as leaders: One or two
questions are set, usually in more than one part, requiring essay length answers. [14 marks]
4. 4. The Articles of Faith and the Pillars of Islam: One or two questions are set, usually in more than one
part, requiring essay length answers. [14 marks]
Total marks = 50
Time 1.5 hours

Instructions for paper

 Continuous prose, no headings, bullet points, numbering etc. should be written like an
essay. Paragraphing can be done.
 Use a black or dark blue pen.
 Make clear and prominent the references by properly written “inverted commas”
 Write your name, Centre number and candidate number in the boxes at the top of the
page. (In CAIE exam)
 Write your answer to each question in the space provided.
 Do not use an erasable pen or correction fluid.
 Do not write on any bar codes and blank margin area
 For extra sheets, use the space / lines of the question you have left for choice.

10 mark Questions

 Knowledge based question


 Examiner is testing how much do you know
 Event based / biographical questions = names, dates, facts, numbers and
references
 Questions which are about the technical details e.g. pillars, quran etc.
 Overall impression is also important that can be created by writing an appropriate
opening line and concluding comment.
 Paragraphing will make your overall impression profound
 However main focus has to be on the details required for the answers.

 Analytical answer
 Here the examiner is testing your understanding
 Your point of view is important
 Resoning for your point of view is important
 Examples from daily life related to the history of islam can
make your answer profound
 Apt and pertinent reference can be added
Levels of Marking (10 marks)

2 3-4 An attempt to present a structured response to the question • Response lacks cohesion or is
undeveloped • Demonstrates some knowledge of the subject covering some of the main points
but without detail • Points made are sometimes relevant and accurate but limited

1 1-2 Some attempt to answer the question • Lacks cohesion and structure • Demonstrates limited
knowledge of the subject • Responses made are limited with little connection to the question
