INTRODUCTION
• Natural parameters as Earthquakes are been a major issue considering
human lives as a major factor for Buildings.
• Considering buildings as a very important structure,it has a major use for
living and other purposes with its safety parameters.
• However in past recent years seismic isolation of structures is most applied
and used for defending seismic hazards.
• Main objective for seismic base isolation is to defend the structure to get
affected from ground frequencies and vibrations occurring in base
superstructure.
CONT…
• Base isolation acts as a filter to filter out the harmful frequencies and
vibrations which can damage the Superstructure and can only let pass the
frequencies not harmful.
• For this, evaluation of natural frequencies of buildings is performed and
bearings are designed considering the structure.
• Various bearing systems can be used for seismic isolation and Friction
pendulum system is one of type that is considered for use.
• In this type of bearing, the force transmitted to the superstructure can be
limited by keeping the coefficient of friction as low as practical.
CONT…
• For large displacements ,which can be more harmful to structures, Friction
Pendulum System(FPS) can be more effective for isolating the structures.
• Restoring stiffness in FPS bearing is proportional to the curvature of the
sliding surface.
• Frequency remains constant during earthquake due to the spherical
sliding surface.
• A resonant problem may occur when the structure resting on FPS is
subjected to a ground motion of a frequency close to the isolation
frequency for which a sliding surface with variable frequency has been
suggested for building structures.
NEED OF THE STUDY
• To study the Seismic Performance of building with Friction pendulum
system with comparision.
• Analyze building by providing triple pendulum base insulator and
examining the displacements changing the slidng curvatures.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
• To analyze the effectiveness of proposed system with different
parameters on a building.
• Design the base isolator system as per building on simulation softwares.
• Validate the work against the experimental observations done by
numerical models.

Title of paper: Seismic Response of Structures with Variable Friction Pendulum System.
Author’s name: Dr.V.R.Panchal,R.S.Jangid.

Review:
• To examine the dynamic response of a flexible multi-story structure
isolated with the variable friction pendulum system (VFPS) under near-fault
ground motions.
• To examine behaviour of structures isolated with VFPS under bi-directional
excitation.
• Variable friction pendulum system is found to give better result for seismic
response of structure under bi-directional excitation.
• Evaluation of time-period of superstructure is also considered.

Title of paper: Seismic performance of bridges with variable friction pendulum system.
Author’s name: Dr.V.R.Panchal, R.S.Jangid, Bhargav.B.Shobhana.

Review:
• Comparision of Friction Pendulum System and Variable Friction Pendulum
System effectiveness is done on a bridge with near fault ground motions.
• For equation of motion , here Newmark iterative method is used.
• For numerical study, prestressed concrete box girders with R.C piers
have been used.
• The maximum displacements for VFPS is less than FPS system.
• With good flexibility of isolators and deck, performance of FPS and VFPS
enhances.
• Under trigonometric cycloidal pulses, seismic response increases with peak
ground accelerations.

Title of paper:Seismic Isolation of Bridges Using Variable Frequency and
Variable Friction Pendulum Isolator System
Author’s name:Agrahara Krishnamoorthy.

Review:
• An isolation system with variable frequency and variable friction is
proposed for bridges in this study.
• Resonance problem analysis is done which is due to low frequency
ground motion and Non-spherical sliding surface and friction pendulum
isolators are used.
• Performance of Variable frequency and variable friction isolator gives
better performance than Friction pendulum system.
• Effectiveness of the proposed surface is examined for different motions
and for wide range of excitation frequency and coefficient of friction.
